Movie synopsis
Made in 1962 on an extremely low budget, Herk Harvey's classic CARNIVAL OF SOULS has become legendary for its ability to create a tensely creepy atmosphere with virtually no special effects. A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) is involved in a car crash when her car falls off a bridge while drag racing with some friends. After she pulls herself from the river, she moves to a new town to take a job as a church organist. Meanwhile, a distinctly eerie and hollow-faced man seems to be following her wherever she goes, while an abandoned lakeside amusement park beckons her with an almost gravitational pull. The effective organ score enhances the film to great effect, as do the bleak landscapes of Utah's salt flats.

A Great Classic Horror Film!!!

Carnival of Souls

A Great Classic Horror Film!!! But unless your a fan of black and white B-Level horror films you probably won't enjoy this movie.

It's predictable and offers a been-there-done-that feel to it. The difference between Carnival of Souls and other been-there-done-that movies is the fact that Carnival of Souls was one of the first movies to do it.

Even though Carnival of Souls was filmed on an extremely low budget, it still manages to be creepy.

The DVD comes with 2 versions of the film, the released version and the directors cut (with extra footage). It's also packed with a large collection of special features. Criterion does a great job converting this film to DVD, it's smooth and crisp and the sound is great.

Candace Hilligoss is great as the lead character. And even though the ending is predictable by todays standards, it still gets the job done.

Final Verdict:

3/5

Rent or Buy?: This film is definitely worth a rental. You'll have to make the choice yourself on whether or not you want to own it. Keep in mind that this movie inspired George A. Romero to make Night of the Living Dead.
