Generally excellent video quality; solid feature set for its class; well designed
Tape housing feels a bit flimsy; fixed eye-level viewfinder needs a better eye cup; manual focus dial a bit loose
An extremely minor upgrade from the HV20, the Canon Vixia HV30 remains a quality HDV camcorder with a couple of performance issues.

Really great little video camera. The HV30 has several features that aren't available on todays Cano Pro-sumer line of cameras including 24 frames progressive, and hotshoe for mounting accessories. The only drawback they have is mini-DV-tape format which they record record too. This we overcame with purchase of additonal portable sd recorder with hdmi input.
Great little camera I use it to get a 2Nd view on what I am filming can hide real easy when filming hunts for wild game.
real happy with my purchase ! I would recommend the HV30 to any one that is interested in a top-notch Hi-Def cam that is not a prosumer model.
This is a great camera for it's purpose - it's not supposed to compete with Canon's older sibs, like its big sister the XH A1/G1 or it's big big Bro, the XL-H1, however, you can use it for cut aways in a multi cam shoot without feeling "naked" - If you don't need 24P, this is the same camera as the HV40 overall...
These all use Tape... people have given tape a bad name lately, and I would say that more pros still use tape than flash cards... why? tons of reasons... but the only con to tape is that if you have a lot of reels to capture, it all has to be done in real time... if this really bothers you, then get a firestore, which will work with any camera with a FW in/out port... Tape is cheap though, and a great way still for archiving the footage you shot... you can't buy anything that allows one hour of capture @25mps compression for $2... so Tape is still a viable way to work... until Flash memory is pennies per mb, tape is king...
but, this camera has it's share of drawbacks too... not many, but... I would never trust it as my A Roll camera... just not enough manual control, like the other canons have...
if you are just looking for a decent HD camera for family events, and mostly indoors with plenty of light, this camera will blow you away... :-)
This is my second HF30. I needed a second one as a way to get my video into my computer. (The FireWire port failed after many years of service.) I've captured some beautiful moose shots in Algonquin Park, Canada with this camera. It has worked flawlessly in some pretty bad conditions. It's not a professional camcorder, but quality/price is great.
