|This exciting new addition to the EOS System combines compact size and affordability with an added dose of features and sophistication. Improving on the previous model, Speedlite 420EX, the new 430EX can now be set into manual flash mode (full power~1/64). Flash compensation can be set on the flash unit, and manual control of the flash zoom head is now possible. Improvements in its circuitry make recycle time 40% faster, and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable "slave unit."|

Im a Pro Photographer, and shoot mostly Canon now a days... This is a great flash unit, and I bought it to work with my 580EX as a slave unit - I never liked radio slaves, and with the E-TTL modes on these, you really have to be doing something very wrong to not get a nice result.
in my studio, I use softboxes and Cont. Lighting, since I also do Video, but if I only did photography, I just like cont. lighting over flash in most cases in the studio...
However, when mobile, flash is a much better way to go, since you don't need power, but will get a very similar result - some shooters love flash, and hate cont. lighting, but not me...
Anyways, the great thing about these flashes, is that you can have them set up in groups from the 580EX - so Let's say, at a wedding - if you wanted to light the whole dance floor, you can set up in the corners with umbrellas as fill, and assign them to only trigger when you choose their group! you can have 3 slaves to one master, and 4 different channels, so you can really go crazy if you need to, and you are working in a huge room by yourself!!
Would I buy this as my only flash? sure, it does beat the on camera flashes by a million, but it's not the same flash at all to the 580ex - The ex vs the ex II is also less expensive - I actually like it better than the newer flashes - yes, the newer one has more power, and slightly better battery life, but finding the 430EX used on here, you will save at least 2x the cost of a new one, and no cheaper way to have a nice little master/slave set up with the 580ex... NOTHING else is needed! - it's the way all this stuff should have been working 10 years ago!
if you are serious about doing portrait work, get a 580ex, and one of these, and either an umbrella or small softbox (which is what I use) - and use the 580ex as your key, and one or 2 of these for Fill - the 2nd one should be use as a Hair light... with a snoot - be perfect for that use...or have it fire behind the subject to give the background more separation....
Good Luck, and happy shooting!
Works great with my Canon 60D's wireless slave system. Bounce and swivel are great. Buying another one.
The flash is fantastic. Pictures come out so much better. I recommend using the flash for indoor situations. I got a high quality canon flash for a great Price on eBay. Don't settle for a different brand.
We were waiting to leave a review until we used it at our friends wedding reception which was yesterday. We have a 7D Canon and the flash worked wonderfully with our camera. The pictures turned out great using this flash we took over a 1,000pictures using this flash and the batteries are still fine. All and all this flash is terrific!! Its a great flash for the money!!
The Canon 430EX flash is a workhorse. Our staff uses this model professionally and it never fails. I am pleased with the product and the purchase through e-bay. I purchased a 2 year warranty as well as it is a wonderful value and good insurance.
