Product Features
  • 10.0-megapixel
The compact, easy-to-use PowerShot SX120 IS uses a 10.0-megapixel sensor - capturing enough detail for poster-size prints or creative cropping.
  • 10x optical zoom with optical IS
With a 10x optical zoom, it's easy to fill the frame with a distant subject. Canon's optical Image Stabilizer counteracts the effect of camera shake, ensuring crisp blur-free results throughout the zoom range.
  • Smart Auto and Easy mode
Designed to let everyone take great shots, Smart Auto mode analyzes subject brightness, contrast, distance and hue. Intelligent Scene Detection technology then selects the scene type from 18 variables, applying the best settings for optimum output. Easy mode deactivates all buttons except flash and reduces on-screen icons, for fuss-free, simple shooting.
  • Large 3.0" LCD
A clear and bright 3.0" LCD screen with wide viewing angle makes framing and reviewing shots a pleasure.
  • DIGIC 4
Canon's DIGIC 4 processor delivers ultra-fast camera operation, superb color reproduction, and advanced noise reduction - for cleaner-looking shots at higher ISO speeds.
  • Face Detection technology
For perfect portraits, the PowerShot SX120 IS features Canon Face Detection technology. Face Select and Track lets you select a particular face as the principal subject in a photo, while FaceSelf-Timer makes group photos easy - taking a shot after an extra face enters the frame.
  • Anti-blur
The PowerShot SX120 IS combats blur with Motion Detection technology, which uses several advanced methods to determine camera and subject movement. ISO settings are then adjusted for optimum results.
  • i-Contrast
In shooting or playback, enhanced i-Contrast optimizes dynamic range according to the scene- retaining detail in shadows and preventing overexposure of highlights. The result is natural images with the best possible contrast.
  • 20 shooting modes
20 dedicated shooting modes help you to achieve superb shots in a wide variety of lighting conditions. For more experienced users seeking greater creative control, a Full Manual control mode is included.
  • VGA movies
Supplement still shots by shooting fantastic VGA quality movie clips with sound. A special long play option uses around half the normal memory card space, allowing you to shoot for longer.

Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewVery Good

Easy to use; best-in-class photo quality; manual and semimanual controls.

Fewer features, slower performance, and bulkier design than competitive models.

Canon's SX120 IS pocket megazoom falls behind the competition in every aspect except photo quality.

AMAZING camera!!

I absolutely LOVE this camera!! I had been using a Kodak digital camera, which was ok for everyday photos. But I needed a better camera for my trip to Europe last fall. A friend of mine had recommended this Canon model after I raved about her photos of a hummingbird in mid-flight outside of her kitchen window. I couldn't believe the clarity of the photo she had emailed to me...from the inside of her kitchen!! So, I had no doubt that THIS was the camera for me! You can select the automatic function which does EVERYTHING for you with just a push of the button...focus, lighting, etc. It has other manual features, but I was not about to take time to mess with them on my trip. The 1200 photos I had taken in Germany, Austria, and Hungary werer AMAZING!! Not a bum shot in the group!! This camera can even take video!! And those, too, were crystal clear with good sound quality. I HIGHLY recommend this camera, which you can get for under $200 if you do some searching....bought mine via Walmart's website, and bough the same camera for my sister through eBay.

Very nice camera

I own a Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera, but there are places where I do not want to carry a large, expensive camera & lenses (such as work; I drive a truck for a living). I was looking for something smaller, less costly to replace (in case it gets broken or stolen), yet that still had full manual program functions. The Canon PowerShot SX120 IS meets these criteria.

When I first started using this camera, I thought it was a bit "laggy" and tended to blur objects unintentionally and wouldn't focus if I was shooting from a moving vehicle in full auto and program modes. When I switched to shutter priority (TV) mode, performance was excellent & I got the shots I was looking for.

I like the aperture on this camera--at 2.8 maximum aperture, it opens wide enough to take nice photos in darkened areas without using a flash at all, if desired. The aperture is one of the reasons I selected this model over the newer SX130.

I LOVE the macro feature on this camera. It does a wonderful job of focusing up close & personal. I recently took a photo of a small lizard (gekko?) and the scales on its skin looked lifelike and natural. In macro focus mode, I have photographed several items so close that the lens was almost touching. That's close!

This camera is does not have a traditional optical viewfinder (the kind you put your eyeball up to), which seems to be typical of most of the smaller digital cameras manufactured these days. I find this problematic when composing a shot in bright sunlight. I simply cannot see my subject & surrounding area in the LCD. For static subjects or ones moving at a slow to moderate speed, this is not too bad; however, I often photograph rapidly moving items such as model aircraft in flight (up to 100 mph), and I found it impossible to frame a shot--I simply could not locate the subject in the LCD before the opportunity was GONE. For those type of applications, I will stick to my EOS 40D.

This camera is powered using 2 AA batteries. I tend to take a lot of photos consecutively and change settings a lot. This seems to use up batteries rather quickly. I bought 2 sets of rechargeable AA batteries & a 15-minute quick charger. I am considering buying one more set of batteries.

Overall, I am very pleased with this camera and its performance. It suits the purpose for which I purchased it very well. If I had the decision to make again (and had the same budget), I would likely still select this model. If I had a larger budget, I would consider the Canon PowerShot S95 instead, but for the money, the SX120 is a great buy!

Great quality/priced camera

Converting from a former Sony owner, the camera takes a little getting used to. After a couple of minutes (and yes looking at the owner's guide) the features and options become familiar and easy to use. I love the size of the LCD display (much larger than my previous Sony) and the 10x zoom is a great feature that I didn't have before. The camera feels solid and seems to be priced very well for what you get. I did some research on this model and other cameras that had similar features and found a lot of reviews that were very positive. I trusted the recommendations of others who already had one and can honestly say, so far, they are true. The Canon brand has always been top notch and I look forward to getting a good life out of this camera. The only draw back I can see so far is that Canon doesn't offer a rechargeable battery pack for this camera as they do for their other models. I can only find rechargeable single AA batteries that are very expensive. The batteries that came with the camera (non-rechargeable AA's) were dead after only 30 minutes of playing around with the camera. I hope this isn't an indication of what to expect when I put fresh batteries in.

Upgrade from the Canon SX110is

Add 1MB to the CCD, make the program easier to use but don't change the layout of any buttons or switches and you have the Canon SX120is.
One of the best small format cameras that has the programming and capabilities of most Digital SLR's for 1/3rd the price. The shutter program is from the Canon Rebel series and rivals that of my Nikon D80, the lens is as sharp adn the 2.8 maximum aperture combined with 10MB CCD and an Aperture Priority shutter setting means you can actually take a low light photo that looks fantastic. I print 8x10 enlargements on my Epson 7800 that awe my clients and have had several of my site photos used on websites and brochures to sell the high rise buildings that my Structural Engineering firm designs.
It runs on 2 AA batteries, so you in a pinch you can rob your Maglite if they run down. Only objection is the built in flip up flash is too close to the top of the body to properly light Macro shots and the ability to 1/2 or 1/4 the flash power would be appreciated but for $199.00 I'm happy.
I recommend that you install a screen protector on the 3" screen as a year of life in my side pouch resulted in s serious number of scratches to my SX110is.
The chassis is glass reinforced plastic and will take a moderate amount of abuse but the design of the zoom motor and lower body rign around the lens is reason to set the power saving program to lens retract 1 min after shooting. A good whack on the lens ring at the body and you are into a repair that cost as much as a new camera.

Canon PowerShot SX120 IS 10.0 Megapixel

This is a great point and shoot camera! I wanted a camera with a more powerful zoom than I had without having to carry around a heavy, large one. This camera is just right. Compact enough to be portable yet able to zoom in. A key selling point was the motion stabilization. I was able to take pictures of my sons and dog jumping on a trampoline that turned out crystal clear. I also like the cords to hook it up to the TV and view the pictures that way. The camera's screen is large enough that I can view pictures on it instantly and tell if I got a good shot. The buttons are simple to operate.

It has one slightly negative feature. The flash is so bright, some of the pictures are overexposed. It also may be my fault since I'm still how to use some of the functions.

Canon cameras have high ratings in the Consumer Guide. The final selling point for me, is that it was made in the USA! I definitely recommend this camera.
