CNET Editors' review

Very Good
  • THE GOOD

Great image quality; minimal shutter lag; speedy performance; optical image stabilization; face detection; optical viewfinder.

  • THE BAD

No manual exposure controls; slow flash recycle time.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

Canon's SD1100 IS adds optical image stabilization to last year's hit SD1000, while delivering just as impressive image quality.

Great little camera. Perfect for Digital Scrapbooking

Created: 11/09/09
I originally purchased a Canon Powershot SD1100 from Walmart a few years ago. I chose it only because it has the fastest shutter speed available. The more I used it, the more I loved it. One of my favorite features is COLOR ACCENT. It allows you to chose one color to keep and the rest of the picture is black and white. It has another feature that I found particularly useful is the COLOR SWAP. I was able to swap my white walls with various colors from paint chips from the stores and see INSTANTLY how it would look. Although I must note that while using these features you must keep the camera VERY still or they will blur. There is a little icon in the left hand corner that lets you know the camera senses minute movement. Using a mini tripod, resting your elbows on a flat surface, or just tucking them in close to your body will produce clear creative pictures.
All the pictures I took with this camera turned out crisp and clear, there was some graininess in low light situations without flash.
My camera has survived a few falls, being used by my Diego-obsessed four year old who loves taking pictures with it.
The camera is small and light, fits comfortably in my pocket and is goes everywhere with me. I have taken some great candid shots because of its great portability.
One thing to note however, you CAN ONLY charge the camera by taking the battery out and putting it in its charger. It CANNOT be charged via USB.

I love this camera. My camera got stolen about 6 months ago and when I went out to purchase a new camera. I researched and shopped but couldnt find any camera that came close to the SD1100. I ended up buying another! I love all of its features, its fast shutter speed, the creative ways you can play with color, its durability and portability. I am a digital scrapper and this camera lends itself so well to my pages. It is the perfect digital scrapbooking camera!

for parts or not working?

Created: 12/21/10
in my attempts to find my younger sister the camera she has been wanting since it came out, i stumbled across this sweet little blue sd1100 is. to say the least, it was truly the match that was made in heaven for a 10 year old girl.

with a pretty weak budget of $50 for her gifts this christmas, i was astound to find that this one was right under my cap. granted, it was being sold "for parts or not working", i decided to see how severely damaged this puppy was. since i have repaired canon point and shoots before, i came to the conclusion that as long as this thing wasn't liquid damaged, it could be worth the while.

i was also surprised to see that the little bugger was in pretty decent shape and worked perfectly fine....as long as you zoom in the slightest before taking a picture. if you didn't, the picture was sure to be blurry. and it comes with the charger?...i'll take it!

the camera arrived a few days later in a vintage mustard-colored, bubble wrap-lined envelope. ALAS!...i thought to myself as i stepped through the doorway to peep the status of the mailbox. twas the moment of truth.

with only a brisk walk down the hallway and into the cave of creativity i like to call my bedroom, it was only a matter of seconds before i picked up that Xacto blade and gave that funky envelope a slice; like i was scalping an intruder that has been flattened by a steam roller.

to my surprise once again, the battery was fully charged, and i watched it power on like it was the first time anyone had ever seen a human-being board a ginormous rocket and blast his ass off this puny orbiting rock we call home.

macro: off, flash: auto, ISO: auto, zoom factor is non-existent...time for raw shot number one. chickih-Pah! lord behold, that picture was clearer than the invisible woman swimming in bermuda. ok, now that was an epic success. lets see how well the macro is, this time with out flash. blah blah chicki-pah...another perfectly clear, and focused picture.

after a ridiculous amount of videos and picture snapping, i decided that this was indeed the best $50 i have ever spent on a camera. as a matter of fact, this is the best "non-working" camera i have ever seen, hands down. so i must say, thank you.

This is an excellent camera! I bought it 3 years ago when the price had gone down and have been using it ever since. In fact, I lent my brother that camera recently and he lost it, so I had to get another just like it to replace my camera! I could have easily gotten a newer model, a new Canon. I love the small pocket size, the color in the pictures, the opt stabilization, and how well it performs. 8MP is plenty! People forget that they can choose the Superfine quality setting on the camera. There are newer versions of this camera, which probably does better in lower-light settings. Sometimes, in low light, the camera takes a while to take a picture. Other than that, it is excellent. It will take me a while to find another great camera before I can upgrade from this one!

A wonderful little camera.

Created: 03/01/11
This is a wonderful little camera. It has relatively low MP, but makes up for it by having very low noise. Unlike newer models it has a viewfinder which makes it easy to frame photos in bright light. The camera has a nearly unending menu of settings to customize the camera for any condition, but is instantly ready to take nice snap shots. These cameras have a slight cult following, but can still be bought very reasonably. Be sure to buy it with charger, battery and importantly the instruction manual.
