"A great little camera with advanced features, the Canon PowerShot S100 builds on the strengths of its excellent predecessor."
"As a trade-off for extending the zoom range to 5x the lens' aperture narrows very quickly as you zoom out. And there's no improvement over the S95's so-so performance, despite the price increase."
The Canon PowerShot S100 is a generally great little camera for advanced shooters who don't mind slowing down a bit from a dSLR.

The GOOD: Good image quality, very compact, yet decent zoom/range, reasonably fast auto-focus and lack of shutter lag (compared to my several year old Olympus P&S, altho not my dSLR), relatively large sensor, ability to shoot RAW.
The BAD: The "lens error" issue; which can occur almost immediately in a humid environment, even when it was working fine at home--then you're stuck with a useless apparatus while on your vacation--happened to me.
The UGLY: Although Canon will repair the above at no cost, it applies only to the serial numbers they designated as problematic. Mine was a later # and Canon would not promise to repair for free--I could send it in and be charged for it! Not the way to stand behind your product.
I think this is a fabulous little camera. The picture quality - in terms of color, focus and distortion - is noticeably better than my SD 870 elph.
I've used digital SLRs in the past, and I like that this camera has a lot of the same features - it gives me more flexibility and helps me take creative pictures I wouldn't otherwise be able to take.
Also, the low-light sensitivity is really good. I usually shoot in either AV or TV modes and I'm impressed by how it can capture very nice shots without the flash. In fact, the only time I've really found myself using the flash is for fill to light up peoples faces on sunny days.
I liked the notion of the ring around the lens, but, in reality, I haven't used it.
I also think it stinks that the time-lapse video is only accessible in the "model" mode where it makes at least 1/2 of the frame out of focus. Canon must have been smoking crack to not allow the choice to make the whole frame in focus.
However, I have had fun playing with the high-speed (slow motion) video mode. It's a really neat feature to include, but, unfortunately, the resolution is quite reduced. Unlike the time-lapse gripe, I can't really hold Canon's feet to the fire for this, because it's such a unique feature in a small camera, and I'm sure they had all sorts of processing, storage and imaging limitations to deal with. The time-lapse gripe is just a stupid oversight; they've broken it by going through the trouble of making a "feature" - the artificial blurry parts!
Good features, such as manual settings, 1080p video, fast lens. Great size and wight for travel. No improve from S90 on picture quality.
I very much like this camera. Takes great photos, the flash is more powerful than I thought it would be, and with the larger sensor size it gives you more flexibility to NOT use the flash in many situations.
The only weakness is the battery life. Buy yourself 2 or 3 batteries because this boy chews through them like butter. Well worth it though with the cameras features, speed, and quality in my opinion.
This has got to be one of the best point & shoot cameras on the market! Has almost all of features of my much larger SLR and small and light enough to slip in a shirt pocket! I needed a small camera with a full manual mode, and this is it! A upgrade from my elph which I also loved, just sometime could not get the shot due to it never being fully manual! I was looking at the new S110 at a camera shop, and the salesman told me it was replaceing the S100 with a few features that I could live without! So I opted for a used S100 at half the price of the S110! These are pricey cameras, but when you cross that oline into professional level cameras, nothing is cheap!
