A Point and Shoot for the Serious Photographer...

Created: 01/29/09
This is a nice little camera. I am a very serious photographer who shoots film (35mm and medium format) and DSLR cameras. I was looking for a point and shoot that was easy to carry and takes great pictures. The Canon G10 fits the bill.

The two things that I like most about the G10 are... the ability to shoot in RAW format and being able to have a reasonable amount of control of the camera with the controls on the body of the camera instead of having to go into the menus to change important settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation.

The camera has a pretty good optical range finder in addition to the three inch LCD display on the back... that's another plus.

All in all... the G10 is a well built camera that I like to shoot with and take with me when bring a full kit of bodies and lenses just doesn't make sense.

With the prices coming down a little bit it really makes sense to buy if you are looking for the things that I already mentioned.

Happy shooting :)

Canon Powershot G10 rocks!

Created: 03/03/10
For a landscape and macro guy like me, a solidly and beautifully designed and built high end 3/4 lb. (large) pocket compact. Almost 15 Mp of nearly unreal resolution at ISO 80, fine at 100, 200; Tri-X "grainy" at 400. Noise pretty much limits to only desperation or special effect use above that. Effective image stabilization at distance. With 10 or 12 shots to favor odds of nailing an anomalously sharp keeper, I can get a razor sharp (or nearly so) one as slow as 1 sec. That allows using ISO 80 under some pretty gnarly, dark conditions. Battery life is excellent.

These JPEGS are really good! Do wish I could shoot RAW + Superfine JPEG (reverts to Fine, it seems, based on my resulting file sizes). Perhaps DPReview underrated this puppy a notch. I bought after much web reading, was astounded by the ISO 80 capabilities (Cross check DPR's much larger sensor Canon DSLR results.) and wouldn't hesitate to spend $500 or more to have one if necessary. If we're now seeing the final limits of tiny sensor quality (as the G11 reversion to 10Mp. might suggest), the G10 may end up being the primo big image wide-focal-length range pocket camera of the era.

I'm going to experiment with the TAMRAC Zipshot tripod ASAP, which weighs about the same as this camera. If it's sturdy enough to be better in the dark with a breeze than IS, it certainly is light enough to "pocket."

Meets specific needs

Created: 01/02/09
I bought this camera for a specific purpose. I wanted most of the capabilities of a DSLR in a point and shoot size. Some places I travel to are not good places to pull out a very expensive looking DSLR (crime). But a point and shoot size camera usually gets overlooked. This camera delivers all the flexibility of a DSLR in a point and shoot size. It will also fit into a relatively inexpensive underwater housing ($250 vs $1100).

If this is the type of camera you are looking for you cannot find a better solution. I love the simplicity and the flexibility. The exposure control is so easy to use, and the RAW capability make this a very powerful camera. It is probably not well suited for capturing high speed action photos (some noise on the higher ISO settings due to the small format sensor). But you can put this camera in a larger pocket which you will never do with a DSLR. Plus it is a lot less expensive than a DSLR and a kit lens.

Canon G10 Digital Camera

Created: 09/06/09
I searched for a quality always-available camera to use in place of my heavier Canon 20D SLR and one to match in robustness which I am familar with. It is a dream to use and the ergonomic attention to it's design/use was reviewed carefully based upon the G9 preceding it. I like the weight and the optical viewfinder (a must) which helps the usage of the valuable image stablizer for slow shutter application. The exposure compensation location is located effectively as is the ISO dial. There is much to learn from this lovely beast to appreciate the full application of controls if one wishes.

I would be happier if there was a flip screen like my dependable Canon A620 but such is coming, I predict, protecting the lCD and to permit low angle and unobtrusive shooting. A highly recommended second camera.

My experience with Canon G10 14.7 MP

Created: 02/05/09
Powerfull and flexible for all king of shots.
I used the battery more than 500 pictures with one charge and still is running!
Real good resolution and nitid pictures as good as with Reflex big ones.
Viewer big size, control modes easy to handle and change.
What i would like for the next model, is to reduce the size and weight to convert it in a real professional pocket camera.
