Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewVery Good

  • THE GOOD

Great performance and pictures; effective image stabilization; attractive, comfortable design.

  • THE BAD

No aperture-priority or shutter-priority modes; awkward optical viewfinder and power button.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS has practically everything you could want in a compact camera, though you might think the price tag a bit steep.

Perfect camera for the casual everyday user. Six years old and still as new

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is the second one of these I've owned; only because the first one is now 6 years old and performing as new. Only one minor complaint about this camera; there is not a battery indicator to warn you when the battery is about dead. I stood under the approach end of a runway watching the Russian Antonov cargo plane (world's largest plane) coming at me, using this camera to video it passing about 100 feet over my head. When the plane was about a mile away, the battery died with no warning! Not good! I still am using hte original battery after 6 years and the battery life is still quite good. I have a 2GB SD card in it, which I think is about as large as it will take. Basically, I think this camera is a great camera for the casual user, and the 6 megapixel is perfect for me; small enough to make uploading pics to ebay or whatever manageable, but high enough for good clarity in original size.

It's a great multipurpose camera, get one!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

One of the best cameras I've ever owned. Well... Actually, it is the BEST. What I've had is: Ricoh (640x480, 1997), Epson 700 (1998, still up and running!), Toshiba (don't remember the model, but it had 10x optical zoom, 2003), Canon S1 IS (2004), Canon S5 IS (now), Canon SD700 (now).
The image quality of SD700 is outstanding. IMO, it takes even better shots than S5. Slim design. Great image stabiliser. The focus assist lamp really helps in low-light environment.
I'm just being picky, but I have to mention them. Here they are, the cons:
    - no swivel display
    - noticeable noise at ISO above 200 (that's the only real drawback).
    - the flash is a bit underpowered. It'd be nice if we could adjust the flash power in AUTO mode.
    - red eyes. MANY indoor photos have this problem. Easy to fix, but still annoying.
    - lack of manual controls (i.e. manual focus, but again, I'm just trying to be picky, you don't really need this one)
    - too slim and light, so it can easily slip out of you shirt pocket when you bend down. BEWARE, I've broken the LCD screen because of that!
Bottom line: It's a great multipurpose camera, get one while there are a few still available.

Too bad they discontinued it or didn't make a newer model like it. Buy it!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I had this camera for over 4 years. It looked and worked as good as the day I got it. I loved this camera! It was stolen while on vacation in May, so I've been looking for another and found one on eBay. Mine was in mint condition but not everyone takes as good a care as I did, so I couldn't expect to get one in perfect condition. But I did get a really nice one in good condition. It will be my vacation camera and I bought a Canson S95 as my main one. You will love this camera! I like that it's a little heavier; makes it easier to hold and use, but still fits in your purse or pocket.

It's an older camera, but who cares?

Cnet Review gave it the best review I could find on their website for a point and shoot digital camera. Nice small size; easy of use; great used price; clear photos including zoom photos; but most of all, I have no complaints over the several months we've owned it. That, to me, makes an excellent camera.

    Oldie but goodie

I have used this particular model for about 4 years. I bought one for my daughter after mine proved to be so reliable. It simply takes great photos. It also has a Canon underwater case which enables one to dive and snorkel. It takes wonderful underwater photos as well. It is easy and intuitive to use. Canon no longer makes and sells this model. Everything available is in used or refurbished condition. If you can find one in excellent to very good shape, you will love it.
