| Canon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Inside, the SD1000 Digital ELPH looks only to the future: 7.1 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom and advanced DIGIC III ensure top-quality images, while focus is fast and sharp and red-eye is automatically corrected. The large and more colorful LCD screen now has a tough, anti-reflective coating that makes it as durable as it is beautiful. | |

Excellent image quality; solid build quality; speedy performance; optical viewfinder; face detection.
No manual exposure controls.
Small size, excellent image quality, and a solid, though not extensive, feature set make the SD1000 a great choice for a compact camera.

Although this model Canon is now about 5 years old; in terms of value for money spent I feel that you can not buy a better digital camera for the money.
The build quality of this camera; which is made in Japan rather than China - is first rate. The anodized aluminum case adds a bit of weight but is so durable and good looking. The Elph that I purchased for around $50 may not have every 2012 bell and whistle but it takes excellent pictures for a point and shoot camera. You will LOVE the feel of the camera in your hand and be pleased for many years with this little jewel of a camera from Canon.
I love this camera because it has a viewfinder which can be used when it is too sunny to see the screen. I had owned one before and used it extensively until I dropped it. I repurchased the camera after a trip to France when I grew frustrated at blurred pictures taken by viewing the LCD screen. There are other features such as zoom, compact size, face recognition software, adjustable light sensitivity that make this camera work well for the day-to-day tourist.
Fist of all, when you can get a slightly rough, but fully functional Canon Powershot camera for less than $12 on ebay, yep... that's Excellent "Value for money", I'd say. That's actually the whole focus of this review. To the best of my knowledge the Powershot SD1000 is no longer in production, however it's fairly easily found in various states of working and non-working condition on ebay and other online sales sites.
Secondly, the SD1000 packs an impressive amount of features
in it's compact design, especially its CCD sensor which gives it's 7.1 mega pixels the ability to captures image sharpness that can put a lot of newer 10, 12, and 14 MP cameras to shame. IF you can find a good one online somewhere, I do recommend downloading the owners manual pdf, because this little jewel is loaded with features that the manual explains rather clearly. Bottom line.. Super little camera. If you can find one at the right price, JUMP ON IT!!
Really loved this camera. I originally bought it 5 years ago in 2007, and it had served me well on vacations, concerts, dorm room shenanegins until this summer when a Hawaiian wave crashed in and destroyed it. I was so happy with this camera, I ordered another one on eBay, hoping to get the same experience. However it came with defects that rendered it incredibly frustrating to use (unreliable flash and battery sensor). I eventually bought a Canon ELPH 300HS to replace this and now have 2 backup batteries :) SD1000 was a great camera for its time, but I think you really owe it to yourself to get a new camera. Night scenic photography is still a bit lacking, only standard video, and still a little slower between shots compared to modern point and shoot cameras. On the plus side, it has the since retired Aquarium mode, which is quite nice.
A friend has this model camera and we were so impressed with it's picture quality, we decided to purchase one. The strange thing is. we have several other Canon "point and shoot" cameras that cost more than this model; however, none of them can produce the same quality pictures. We love it and would recommend this model to anyone who is looking for an easy to use camera that produces really good quality pictures.
