Though it's not a great choice for low-light shooting, the Canon PowerShot A630 is a solid, feature-rich digital camera.

I have had 3 of these cameras because one was stolen and its replacement got wet on a sailing trip. I liked this model so much I bought another nice used one on Ebay since they were no longer available retail. The pictures are stunning and easy to take. Camera is easily portable but has good weight and feel in the hand - not bulky and not tiny like the newer ones you have to hold/balance with your fingers. The four standard AA batteries are a nice plus too. I use the lithium kind and can takes hundreds of pictures before running low, but alkaline and rechargeable work well too. This was a great series A630/A640/A650 that Canon should have never stopped making!
I bought this camera to replace one of the same I had for the last 3 years but was broken after being dropped several times. This is THE BEST camera I have used! Fully automatic OR fully programmable, it takes beautiful photos and is quite easy to use without reading the manual. I LOVE the vari-angle viewfinder! No need to be above a crowd or on my belly to take a picture - just put the camera at the level of the object to be photographed and angle the viewfinder toward yourself and snap it! Why doesn't Canon make a model like this anymore? The viewfinder also folds back into the body of the camera and swivels so the screen is protected and stays clean. Excellent product! It has great optical zoom and I get lovely enlargements from the photos. I wish I could own one of these forever! These are still in high demand.
This is a great easy to use comfortable digital camera. I actually own 4 of them. The camera has a wonderful macro lens feature, much better than a lot of higher end cameras, which suits my needs perfectly for taking pictures of jewelry and makers marks. It focuses down, on small details, without any problem.
The resolution for my purposes is fine, as you can see from my pictures of the jewelry. It is precise and clear. I am sure the newer cameras have a higher resolution, but to the naked eye, there is really no discernible difference.
The advantage is, it is an older model, no longer made, and can be found for less than 1/3 of the original price on ebay. This is why I have 4. It has lots of features, but I do not use most of them. The point and shoot with the automatic focus takes care of itself, for jewelry, and cutting off the flash gets rid of the glare. I am loyal to a fault.
What I have had problems with, is the lens. It has gotten stuck in the closed position, or does not open all the way, a couple of times, and that is why I have 4. Buying a re-furbished one, with a warranty, makes a lot of sense.
The smallish size of the A630 is great, and makes it easy to take it almost anywhere. The handgrip makes shooting one-handed a breeze, and in the AUTO setting you can get great photos, even at 70 miles per hour! I know, because I shot some great pictures out of a moving car on a trip I took. There are plenty of features on this camera--more than a lot of people would ever use! Although a lot of newer cameras have more pixels, the eight pixels that the Canon Powershot A630 has are plenty, and produce beautiful quality photos. Indoors, the camera sucks in a lot of light, so you don't always have to use a flash. The viewfinder display on the back is very handy in that it swivels around, a feature that not that many cameras in this size category have. The swivelling display allows you to shoot over the top of obstacles (such as people's heads) and still see what you're photographing. I loved this camera enough to replace it with a used one I found on Ebay after the one I had was stolen. I highly recommend the Canon Powershot A630 for anyone who wants a good little workhorse camera!
The Canon A630 PowerShot is a great camera for a contractor. This is the second one I have had. My first one has a worn case and still works perfectly- except the lens has a little dust on it ( on the backside) that I can't get clean. So I found another one on Ebay and I am looking forward more of the same great performance. Both cameras were described as used but basically were new. The A630 is simple to use or you can set it for unusual situations. The "Auto" handles most situations. The rotating viewfinder lets me take photos from difficult positions. As a contractor there are many times I need a view of something that I can't really get to but I can stick the camera through a hole and see in the viewfinder what the camera is seeing and take the pic. I use it daily to document the work and problems as well as conditions for which I want to account for when preparing a bid. I find it interesting that when I get home and am looking at the pictures I see things that I did not see when I was looking at the job. I take dozens of photos every day and a useful camera is indispensable to me.
And I didn't mention it before but the quality of the picture is more than good enough without using the higher quality settings. I try to keep the size down but when I need a higher quality pic it is easy enough to change. I like the four AA batteries it uses - lasts a long time
These A630 cameras seem to be durable as I have dropped mime more times than I can say and I won't exaggerate but as I said at the beginning, the case is worn and it still works perfectly. The camera size is fine, it will go into one of my back pockets or a jacket pocket easily. The shape of the camera makes it easy to hold and take pictures right handed.
I would buy it again.
