Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewVery Good

Excellent photos for its price; reliable Auto mode.

Short battery life; low-resolution LCD; slow shooting performance; very basic features.

Though its feature set is light, the Canon PowerShot A490 is a very good choice for anyone on a tight budget who still wants excellent photo quality.

Excellent product with superior macro, and convenient AA batteries

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Pros: the macro function that goes to 1 cm (0.4 inches) from the object. There is only a handful point and shoot camera that can do it. I take many close-ups, and I can say that when it comes to macro shooting, this camera can beat many other expensive cameras. Also this camera uses 2 AA batteries, which comes in handy when your rechargeable batteries run out while you are traveling. It is light weight, small, thus very easy to carry around. I have used A480 for three years until it gave up on me, so, I am expecting this camera to last as long as my old A480. Speaking of A480, the menu options become much more user friendly than A480 too. The time of the start-up is also improved from A480. It may be litter slower than expensive cameras, but it is much faster than iPhone's camera. Plus, regardless of the low price tag, it takes good pictures!

Cons: Cheap plastic feel may not be appealing compared with ELPH series; however, it will make weight of the camera much lighter too.

The one sad thing is new A series do not have any of advantages I enjoyed (superior macro and AA battery), but its about A series and Canon, but not this one.

MilSpec mentality purchase

My son's a Marine grunt on deployment in Southeast Asia and wanted a camera for his birthday, but it had to be small enough to fit in his pocket without bulging and it had to be lightweight – hey, they carry 80 pounds into the field. Selfishly, I wanted to see some quality photos of him and the sights, so I opted for the Canon 10 megapixel A490 that had all the features I wanted, plus it shoots video. The lens collapses into the body so there are no protrusions and the entire design is of rounded metal edges for strength and easy slip in/slip out of pocket. Can't wait to start seeing his pictures. But, first, his birthday package has to catch up to him as he sails at least one of the seven seas.

Easy to use, nice pictures without all the overwhelming buttons.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a great little camera that takes wonderful pictures. It's not a heavy rugged type camera. It's rather light weight and made of plastic but it gets the job done. Operates on only two AA batteries. The design is pretty flat so you can carry it in a front pocket without damaging it. There are quite a few features that are obtainable through menus. Has a nice clutter free design. If you know someone that is apprehensive about digital cameras because of all the buttons, this would be a good camera because it's not so overwhelming. Just leave it on the auto mode and you're good to go.

Good quality for basic camera.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This has pretty good picture quality for a basic camera. My only complaint in a long charge time after taking a picture with flash.
