I own a Canon fs10 camcorder, which I love. Needed camcorder used for a friend to try (chip style). picked the fs20 because I knew how to operate it.
Best thing Has a setting where it will take completely automatic movies or stills in same mode (1 button start-stop). pictures & movies look sharp on a TV. The built-in chip stores 8GB movie/stills. 1.5 to 4.5 hours movies & a ton of stills, & battery last over 2 hours, great zoom. Has mike input & headphone output. Haven't tried to edit any movie clips yet.
cons: Out of automatic mode has so many screens & menus to sift thru to change setup things. Hard to remember everything you want to control
Overall : great camera will do almost anything you want if you can figure out the menus. In auto is easy to use. I would highly recommend to anyone. cheap learning tool. does 16x9 format but it is not HD. Is light & compact but bigger than the flip. Has a ton more features than the flip, but is 2x bigger.
I recently purchased the Canon FS20 camcorder and I really like it. As an avid video enthusiast I looked for certain features and the Canon fs20 was a good choice. The video quality is good and with proper lighting and manually setting white balance, exposure and focus it gets pretty darn good looking results. Having a stereo headphone jack for monitoring audio is a blessing. The audio from the on board mic picks up quite well and the quality is pretty good. But plug a good mic into the external microphone jack and the audio is worlds better. Battery life is great giving you about three hours on a full charge. The amount of recording storage time built in is 8GB and it gives you a slot for an SD card.
When I first took it out of the box my thought was how small it is. But it fits my hand nicely and the light weight is actually appreciated after an hour or so of shooting. The controls are typical Canon joystick and menu. I like the joystick over touch screens myself. Automatic controls work good keeping things in focus and well exposed. In auto setting the low light capabilities are not great. Manually setting exposure helps in low light situations. Don’t use the little one led bulb light built into the front, it doesn’t do much to light up the scene, but thanks for trying canon. I enjoy using the Canon FS20 and would definitely get another.
this is a great camcorder my last camcorder was a flip HD and to be honest the quality of video is better on the flip but by just a little the fs20 isn't HD but it's one of the best standard definition camcorders out there the reason i got the fs20 is because well here's a little rap i thought of wile I was anxiously waited for it to show up on my door step (the fs20 gots a light and a mic it don't shoot in HD but it's aaalright!) nooo but seriously it beats the flip 10 times the mic function is awesome to have for loud events unlike the flip that always pegs out it can't take bass worth a flip lol btw what i mean by pegs out i mean while your recording something loud the mic will reach a point that it just cut out all sound and start over than cuts out again very annoying. but the fs20 not even the built in mic pegs out it just quiet's down a tad and like a said you can hook up a professorial mic or even a powered mic for concerts, car shows, sporting events, and street racing.......lol on a track of coarse it's got 2000x zoom witch is tricky to get focus depending on lighting and it can take pictures the light is very useful and it's got a long battery life witch the flip didn't have i wish i new about the fs20 before i bought a flip If i new that i would have to be an idiot, loser and a failure of man kind to choose the flip over the fs20 all the cheaply made flip did is point and shoot video it don't got any functions and it got repaired 3 times in a years since i owned it but the fs20 is loaded with functions and had no problems btw I know the flip doesn't suppose to compare to the fs20 there compleatly different camcorders.
I bought this Canon FS20 camcorder for basic video-recording use.
Colour, zoom, quality are OK. Internal 8gb storage and the option for another SD-card is very useful. The camcorder does not have a touch-screen, however the joystick is sufficient to get by.
The only bad point is the low capacity 800mah battery, and the battery compartment only allows one size. So instead of buying a battery with high capacity to replace multiple low capacity battery, you will need to buy MORE batteries and carry them around instead of a single high capacity battery.
I am currently a college student looking to expand my blogging and personal brand. This cam was the best choice for me because it was affordable on my college budget and works great for my purposes. I do not need any amazingly high-tech camera, but this has great quality, came with all parts necessary, including all software and instruction manuals. The built in microphone is super sensitive and even picks up whispers, so it took me a little bit to learn how to use it appropriately. I also struggled a little with transference from the camera to the computer for uploading, but if you use the instruction manual, it tells you everything. You just can't be lazy about it. I love this camera and it will likely last me the next 3-4 years because it is easy to carry, easy to use, priced decently, and decent quality! Love my new camera and have been playing with it for almost two months.
