Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewOK

  • THE GOOD

Aggressive price; excellent, low-noise images; speedy performance; long battery life.

  • THE BAD

Can't save custom settings; limited metering options; continuous-shooting mode snaps a maximum of four shots.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

A low price boosts the Canon EOS Digital Rebel's appeal for amateur film-SLR photographers going digital and high-end snapshooters who want to experiment more.

Canon rebel 10D/300D dslr 6.3 body

Best camera for beginners or someone on a budget to get their feet wet in digital photography. As I had several FD lenses from my canon film camera I was glad camera can accommodate several types of adapters like fd->eos, M42->eos, OM->eos. It is testament to popularity of canon eos line that many adapters are available. So one can purchase other manufacturer lenses and use on the camera although only with Manual Focus and aperture priority mode or full manual mode. I also like that 3rd party offers both dual 45° or 180° split image focus screens with micro ring collar so MF focusing is a piece of cake. What I don't like is the field of view crop factor (FOVCF) of 1.6x but that is the cost tradeoff as most cameras in this class is 1.6 factor. When purchasing camera be aware of how many shot actuation of camera usage to get idea of wear. The camera registers in the picture taken cyclic numbering 0001-9999. Camera can have gone through more than one cycle if used for photo journalism (many shots taken). If cameras been through 10 cycles (~100,000 shot), I would think camera is near end of life use. I eas also able to get into using cokin P series filter ND and GND filters with these lenses along with HiTech filters to exploit more photographic avenues. Of course all the canon manuals are available online on the internet from canon so you are not left hanging. And alot of 3rd party vendors provide the battery and CF card needed by the camera.

Glad to own this camera.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Aazing camera for beginners. Great quality of photos. All the features of professional camera for the low price. Great sensor sensitivity, low noise (even in comparison wiith newer models due to big pixel size). Natural colors, raw mode is very nice. But it doesn't have: 2 sec delay(only 10 sec), raw+jpeg (only raw or only jpeg) and some professional features that I don't need.
To sum up it is DSLR camera for begginers with pro image quality. It is almost exactly EOS-10D by the image quality and even firmware available that makes them similar in functionality.

Reasonable old camera with good picture quality.. Perfect for amateur..

No, I would not recommend this product.

EOS 300D is a decent performer... Very suitable for an amateur photography which just moved from Pocket Camera. The PQ is very amazing when coupled with L lens, it can easly outperform 1100d(kit lens) in PQ, but the resolution. 6 MegaPixels is more than enough for a home user like me.

Pros :
-The PQ is good enough.
-Exchangeable lens (EF & EFS supported).
-Reasonable noise.
-Extremly sharp when coupled to EF 16-35mm 2.5f L. (5 stars)
-Decent kit lens.
-Bracketing function. (Nikon d3000 doesnt hav it)
-Very nice small LCD Screen. (better than my EOS 20d)

Cons :
-Slow burst speed.
-4 Pict buffer
-Slow writing to card speed
-The soft rubber grip, peeling off easily. (I'm a tender user)
-The worst shutter sound i've heard from a camera.

This digital camera reduces my need to use 35mm film cameras.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

It has a sufficient quality and number of pixels to make not quite perfect glossy 8" by 12" prints; which product is the entire point of photography as I see it. A 35mm camera with medium speed film can make the same product but it entails the inconveniences of film.

A 35mm camera with fine grain film can produce 12" by 18" prints with proper scanning. And a 120 film camera will make 18" by 27". The original Canon Digital Rebel is a great bargain for complementing the capabilities of good film cameras.

I enjoy everything about the handling and controls of this Rebel. But it is slow to transfer pictures by way of the usb cable. I put a 1 GB Compact Flash card in it, and would like to not continually remove and reinsert it.

Great camera for a beginner user of SLR camera.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I was looking to replace my broken camera, which was a simple point and shoot, and was bidding on some cameras with a 26x zoom. I saw this Canon and had heard that they were easy to use. I had a great experience with the seller, who even worked with me to solve a minor problem. I have enjoyed this camera and its ease of use. The automatic focus makes this camera so easy to take pictures and I am currently learning how to use this camera on the manual focus. I have been able to take many high quality pictures with this camera. The camera came with the camera, basic lens (25-80mm), battery, memory card, bag, and battery charger. I felt like I received a great value. Even though this is an older model SLR camera it is perfect for me as a novice.
