Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewExcellent

  • THE GOOD

Excellent low-light performance; fast and responsive; straightforward controls; nice balance of features for both experienced and rookie photographers.

  • THE BAD

Pop-up flash casts shadow with some lenses; average battery life.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

An excellent midrange digital SLR, the 30D has given way to its even more excellent successor, the 40D. However, it remains a great choice if you can find it at a good price.

Canon EOS 30D

Beautifully made, titanium frame I believe. Stainless steel lens mount, very solid control knobs and buttons. Having previous experience with Canon CMOS sensors and other DSLRs to compare, I find the quality and depth of photos with this camera to have a slight edge, particularly in low and available light work. Seems to have a quality for landscapes that I can't get with other sensor types also (IMO). As other reviews state, the extended ISO speeds are actually usable even out to 3200. I have taken night shots that are impossible with anything else except active electronic night vision cameras. Amazing. This camera gives a sense of security when hand-held, due to its quality construction and comfortable design. The viewfinder is OK (not as bright as I'd like), the rear LCD is clear and easy to menu through. At this LCD resolution I can zoom in to review and actually tell if photo is focused properly. Don't mean to sound like a Canon commercial, but even without IS lenses I will take shots I wouldn't attempt with anything else due to the high ISO capabilities. A larger DSLR than some, but even with my medium-sized paws I tend to go for this one over my smaller digicams because it is such a comfortable camera to work with. Enough said.

=CANON 30D=

I love this Canon 30D. I bought it used and haven't had a single issue. It came in excellent condition and I got a fair price on it as well. Its perfect for me and what I'm doing. Its a larger sized camera, so its perfect for my large hands. The Canon Rebel series, are a great camera, but way to small for me. I even bought a battery grip for the Rebel and it was still a little to small. And since its a smaller size, the buttons are small and close together. The 30D is an excellent camera with tons of features. I love the 2.5" LCD screen and the top LCD display. Also, the turn-style dial, makes for easy, fast viewing of already taken shots and scrolling thru the menus quickly. I also bought a battery grip for this camera. Highly recommended, especially if you are out and away all day. It holds 2 battery packs. All in all, a great camera and purchase, here on eBay. Have fun bargain shopping out there, I do.

Review For: Canon EOS 30D 8.2 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Kit w/ EF-S 18-55mm Lens)

I have been looking to get into amateur photography for some time now. I really wanted a dSLR, but just couldn't afford a new one which goes for thousands of dollars. The Canon 30d was right up my alley. When I bought mine, they had already been around for about 5 years.

This camera was around $1300 5 years ago, when new....so this camera has tons of features that many cheaper ($800) newer dSLRs don't even have.

First off, Canon cameras come with their own software out of the box to run the camera tethered to a computer. Nikons do not have this for free, you have to pay $100 extra to get their software.

The kit lenses that come with the Canon 30d is really nice. It's not professional L quality lens, but iis great for a beginner. I had this camera up and running right out of the box and it takes excellent pictures.

Some may think the 8.1 megapixel is a downside, but I like that the files aren't super large, so you can shoot more pictures for the memory space. Unless you are shooting for billboard prints, 8.1 mpx will be perfect for you.

Pair this camera with a Canon Speedlight and you'll be taking professional pictures in no time. I bought a used 420ex speedlight for indoor bounce flash use. It's not the greatest speedlight, but I didn't want to spend $400+ on a new one. I don't plan on doing too much indoor shooting anyway.

Onboard flash? YES! The 30d has an onboard flash which is super handy in a pinch. Many high end super expensive dSLRs don't even have this feature.

I plan on picking up a aPuture intervalometer, a CowboyStudio wireless flash trigger, and a gray card (Lastolite?). For little money you can jump head first into the dSLR world and see if it's right for you. A bounceflash really makes your indoor pictures pop with little setup time.

I recommend this camera to anyone. It can shoot high speed 5 frames per second, has the hot shoe for speedlights, USB tethering, and works with any Canon lenses...you can't go wrong!! Oh, don't forget you can also run a grip on it too, with two batteries for long life. Works great if you're taking super long exposures with an intervalometer

Outstanding Performance in Classic DSLR

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Canon 30D is an outstanding example of classic DSLR capability. The 8.2mp Canon CMOS sensor does an outstanding job, especially in low light conditions. Newer cameras have added features and more mp, but can't deliver better picture quality. Shooting at 1600 ISO enables high quality photography in conditions that at first do not look possible. This camera has a cast magnesium body with a feel that cannot be delivered with an all composite camera. These cameras are a great bargain. They are so inexpensive that you can easily add one as a backup. And you may discover that in certain conditions, your backup becomes your go to shooter.

D30 still an excellent picture taker

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Canon D30 is a first generation DSLR and now appears very dated in its specificatiions. However, it is an excellent picture taker with image quality far superior to average P&S cameras and with far higher build quality than today's entry level DSLR's. Don't get hung-up on pixel counts. The D30 can make excellent, clean 8x10 prints. It's biggest limitation is probably its AF system with only 3 focus points. But, for a very affordable DSLR for walk-around photography, it is hard to beat.
