The Brothers McMullen (DVD, 2000)

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This was actually a pretty good movie, but the cinematography and the acting was at best, ordinary. Not your typical Hollywood production, full of four-letter words and sex scenes.

The entire movie revolves around a character study of three brothers, Barry, Jack, and Pat. Barry and Pat move in with Jack who is married but having an affair with Barry's old girlfriend Ann. His wife Molly has been on his back to have a child. The youngest brother, Pat, is trying everything to break his engagement with Susan and winds up being devastated when she dumps him first. He was a devout Catholic and she was Jewish, and she knew that it would never work.

Barry is not interested in any long term relationships until he meets Audrey. He accused her of stealing away an apartment that he wanted. At first things are rocky, but soon a relationship develops.

Before long, Molly discovers Jack's affair when she finds condoms in his pocket. His brothers try to intervene, but without success. Pat begs Susan to take him back, and she eventually does, only for him to drop her for the girl next door, Leslie.

Jack decides to break it off completely with Ann, and try to make amends with his wife for good. The movie ends with all of them at the family homestead with a newfound belief in love and a desire to not let the ghosts of the past stand in their way.

Fitting!

The Brothers McMullen is a well written, well acted original storyline by Edward Burns. It is witty, touching and humorous, and hits home to anyone who has siblings. It was refreshing to see a movie that wasn't your typical hollywood-shmollywood-been-done-a-million-times-already, and I enjoyed Edward Burns acting performance tremendously, as who better to act the role than the writer himself? Had to add this one to my collection without doubt!

Simple Story but Fun...

This movie has the power to keep occupied with the trivial lives of its characters. Hard to say why, but I found myself sitting there not wanting to move even though very few recorded material has the power to keep me in my seat these days. Must be Ed Burns' boyish charm or his silly noncommittal approach to relationships.

Didn't hold my interest

I just couldn't stay interested in this movie. I didn't like the actors or the story line. It might have been better with other actors though.

B-grade Budget Movie

Poor lighting. Poor directing. I couldn't watch very much of this.
