I first found out about Joan Osborne in the movie Standing in the shadows of Motown" which is about the Funk brothers who played on more hits than the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Beach Boys combined but were never known to the average music lover. When they got to the part where Joan was to sing some of those hits I thought she certainly had some big shoes to fill, well she either has big feet or can sing. Its the latter although I haven't seen her feet I am sure they are normal...;-)
Joan put all her heart and soul into her performance of "What becomes of the broken hearted" and that cut is on this album. She was certainly acceptable to the remaining Funk brothers on this cut and more than so for me. Her performance actually brought tears to my eyes and I was an instant fan. I had to buy her whole catalog after hearing this one. Buying them from iTunes was going to cost me about $15 each but I was able to find a great reseller here on eBay and was able to get her whole catalog at a much better price, so I bought the whole series.
Expect great things from Joan, she is the real deal. I am certain if she keeps going she will reach the household name level of fame soon and will become a legend ala JJ, Aretha, Momma Cass and other bigger than life musical heros.
Her soulful renditions of the classics are worth the price of each of her albums but her own tunes are strikingly honest and heartfelt making each CD a must have for those looking for something good musicwise. For older music lovers there seems to be few and far between options these days and its always good to find something with great songs and music arrangements. I highly recommend Joan Osborne to those who remember the sixties sounds from Motown and love that genre of music. If that's your thing, rent the movie and watch her performance or you can also see many of them on YouTube for free. That's my advice and if you find this treasure please write and confirm my findings for others.
Joan Osborne is one of my favorite artists, and I feel in this case, what makes her such a great singer (the diversity of her style and voice) went against her. This CD is very slow, with no truly powerful songs, and some songs are so annoying and 80's sounding that I skip over them when listening to the CD. Joan has an amazingly adaptable voice, but her song choice on this CD was very poor. I am glad she released another CD, "Wild One" so soon after this CD was released. Of course I will keep it as I add to my Joan Osborne CD's, but this is definitely the her worst CD.
Joan Osborne, hits a home run, with this CD, her raspy voice, fits the Motown sound, good backup music. Wish she would do more Motown. Love this CD. This is my second, gave first to a friend.
Joan again does a collection of motown classics, and familiar standards. The most unexpected surprise was the smoothness of he voice. This album is smooth, none of the expected gravelly lyrics. Joan seems to have grown up. This may be a mellower Joan, but still enjoyable.
