Struggling, intensely claustrophobic actor Jake Scully (Craig Wasson) spends his spare time spying on an always-undressing beautiful woman while house-sitting at his friend's swanky Los Angeles bachelor pad. Then he notices a big ugly guy with a power drill is also spying on her, and Scully begins trailing them in a bizarre game that eventually leads to murder. To solve the mystery, Scully infiltrates the porn industry and stars in an X-rated video for 1980s band Frankie Goes to Hollywood, eventually linking up with adult film star Holly Body (Melanie Griffith), the key to all the strange goings-on. Director Brian De Palma delves merrily into his bag of cinematic tricks for this mystery, which comes off as a sort of sex- and sleaze-filled hybrid of Hitchcock's VERTIGO and REAR WINDOW. Griffith, then known mainly as the daughter of Hitchcock leading lady Tippi Hedren, earned fans and critical buzz with her refreshingly funny, sexy performance as the porn star. A pre-NYPD BLUE Dennis Franz appears as a director. Evocative use of L.A. locations and De Palma's creative camerawork help mask the less believable plot elements, as does a nice score by Pino Dinoggio
...and if you like Brian De Palma films, you will like this one too...'Body Double' features a virtual nobody, Craig Wasson, in the male lead....De Palma might have done the film more justice if he'd gotten a more recognizable star for the part...I'm certain many buffs of the film treasure the seemingly timeless dance floor classic - Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Relax' - segment of the film, which was done in an MTV music videoish fashion...this De Palma thriller also stars a sexy, and often scantily-clad, Melanie Griffith - although Melanie was a little skinny for my taste, and would've looked better to me had she been closer to the weight she was nine years earlier in the superb beauty pageant comedy 'Smile'...and 'Body Double' affords a chance for Melanie Griffith's big fans(AKA; her closet stalkers, of which I'm sure she must have several) to hear her say things she doesn't often say in mixed company, or in other films, or ever...she really got into the whole porn star thing in this film.
Brian De Palma is often criticized for his lack of originality - in that he seems to prefer borrow from other film greats, namely Hitchcock - but not so surprisingly De Palma nearly always delivers entertaining films - some are sleepers - like 2002's not-so-well-known but very entertaining 'Femme Fatale', featuring Antonio Banderas(one of Banderas's best performances, if you asked me...it's a hoot when he is forced to act gay in a certain situation in the film...and he pulls it off perfectly, without ever once going over the top with it or acting too stereotypically 'nelly', like many actors too often do when playing a gay role, especially when they are looking to get a laugh or two), and the beautiful and sexy, even though she's a blonde, Rebecca Romijn(sorry Becky..I prefer brunettes..but you are a top blonde, nonetheless...and she is a brunette in some scenes, and quite possibly in real-life, sans the peroxide, as well) - with a very good performance turned-in by the model turned X-Men film star.
This is a great DVD to have in your collection, to pull out on a rainy day for an entertaining evening's viewing, if only to reminisce a bit...and to get to hear Melanie Griffith go thru her list of THINGS SHE WON'T EVER DO in a movie again(as I alluded to above, it's quite a list of sex acts and things that you won't hear her saying in many of her other films - and good for a few laughs everytime).
'Body Double' is one of my wife's old favorites - she just loves the Frankie Goes To Hollywood 'Relax' segment of scenes, and wants to dance every time she sees it.
One of the Most Sexy Intrigues that has ever been commited to Film. Melanie Griffith plays the part of a adult film star with class. Deborah Shelton Shines in her role of Gloria Revelle, making her the most Sexy Woman to ever grace a Screen, & even though her lines are limited, Her Sultry Voice has replayed in my mind for all these years since I first watched this movie on VHS in the mid 1980's. Craig Wasson plays his bumbling low budget, B movie actor turned Victim, then Hero with a little tongue in cheek humor. If you can figure out "Who Dun It" before the end, You have seen it before. the real plot lies in it's ability to keep you Glued to the screen, even though your drink is empty, and you gotta go real bad. If not for the Pause Button, you would Never leave your Seat.
This movie looks as good as any film I've ever seen, having said that it's a trashy story about a claustrophobic cheap movie actor who gets fired from a vampire movie because he can't lie down in a coffin! He goes from that to house sitting for a rich actor friend and spying on a neighbor with a telescope. A lot of movies make LA look depressing, not this one. The scenes at the beach are great looking. It has a great soundtrack too. The plot doesn't really hold up, and it's a story about low budget horror movies and porno films.
I like it because the actors look good and the settings are so cool, and because of the the soundtrack. It's fun movie to watch despite the plot holes and the violence.
I consider it Brian DePalma's signature film.
You get up in the morning & all seems well.
By afternoon your world has turned upside down.
That's the idea of this movie.
Brian De Palma sure likes Hitchcock movies, and this
one is an homage to a few.
What is real is quite unreal.
Day is night, beauty is ugliness, and friends are enemies.
Great entrance by Melanie Griffith and her double, a thing to behold.
You won't know until the very end what is right and wrong.
That's the idea here, and it stands as it is, a thriller,
with lots of sex and imagination.
Get it on eBay. I paid $1.64 for it.
About the price of 3/4 gallon of gas.
It'll get you much farther than that.
