Movie synopsis
New York City ballet dancer Nina (Natalie Portman) enters into an intense battle of wills with a talented and ambitious new arrival (Mila Kunis) who seems intent on edging her out of the spotlight in this supernatural-flavored psychological thriller from director Darren Aronofsky. Nina covets the role of the Swan Queen in a production of Swan Lake by acclaimed theater director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel). The harder Nina works to win the part, however, the more overwhelmed she becomes by her suspicions that talented newcomer Lily (Kunis) is intent on stealing it away from her. As the production draws near and Nina struggles to master the duel roles of the White Swan and the Black Swan, she grows increasingly unstable to the point where she finds it difficult to distinguish fantasy from reality. Though her burgeoning friendship with the unconventional Lily helps Nina to jettison her perfectionist instincts and find her footing as the Black Swan, the closer she gets to perfecting the role, the further her sanity erodes until she begins to experience a bizarre and profound transformation.

Editorial reviews

"Part tortured-artist drama, BLACK SWAN looks like a tony art-house entertainment. But what gives its a jolt is its giddy, sometimes sleazy exploitation-cinema savvy."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (12/03/2010)

4 stars out of 4 -- "At the center of this dreamlike story is Natalie Portman's exquisite performance of a troubled ballerina who evolves from timid to seriously unhinged."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/03/2010)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Aronfsky treats ballet as one of the bleeding arts. And so does his breathtaking star, Natalie Portman, who delivers an all-stops-out performance that will soon be the stuff of legend."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (12/02/2010)

"Darren Aronofsky's backstage ballet thriller BLACK SWAN is lurid and voluptuous pulp fun, with a sensationalistic fairy-tale allure." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (12/24/2010)

4 stars out of 5 -- "With Natalie Portman dominating the action and exhibiting a screen maturity not seen from her before, this all-stops-out Grand Guignol melodrama exhibits more than enough blood, sweat and tears to score nicely beyond the ballet crowd."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (12/10/2010)

"BLACK SWAN is a florid, often lurid, completely enthralling film held in place by a disarming Portman, who rarely leaves the frame." -- Grade: A-
A.V. Club - Keith Phipps (12/02/2010)

Included in USA Today's "10 Best Films Of 2010" -- "A deeply disturbing psychological thriller..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (12/31/2010)

Included in Roger Ebert's "The Best Films of 2010" -- "BLACK SWAN uses powerful performances by Natalie Portman and Vincent Cassel to represent archetypal attributes..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/16/2010)

4 stars out of 5 -- "BLACK SWAN is a film obsessed with movement, colours, sets, sound design, Clint Mansell's clanging score and, of course, performance..."
Total Film - Jamie Graham (12/30/2010)

4 stars out of 5 -- "Aronofsky pulls off some astonishing visual flourishes....Like THE WRESTLER, BLACK SWAN also showcases Aronofsky's ability to tease career-best turns out of lead actors, in this case Portman."
Empire - Dan Jolin (01/21/2011)

"A film that gives the hair on the back of your neck a serious workout."
Sight and Sound - Lisa Mullen (02/01/2011)

4 stars out of 5 -- "Props to Portman, who's in every scene -- and Winona Ryder, brilliant as the neurotic, toxic former prima ballerina."
Uncut - Michael Bonner (02/01/2011)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Told with passionate intensity, gloriously and darkly absurd. It centers on a performance by Natalie Portman that is nothing short of heroic..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/01/2010)

Ranked #7 in Rolling Stone's "10 Best Movies Of 2010" -- "A fever dream of a ballet thriller..."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (12/24/2010)

"A gorgeously shot, visually complex film..."
Hollywood Reporter - Kirk Honeycutt (12/01/2010)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "A ballet film that captures both the gossamer pink softness of classical dance and the scarier psychological impulses lying just beneath the serene surface."
Washington Post (12/03/2010)

Review For: Black Swan (Blu-ray Disc, 2011, 2-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy)

nina (natalie portman) is a ballerina in a new york city ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. when artistic director thomas leroy (cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina beth macintyre (ryder) for the opening production of their new season black swan, nina is his first choice. but nina has competition, a new dancer: lily (kunis) who impresses both the white swan requires a dancer who can play both white swan with innocence and grace, and the black swan, who represents quile and sensuality. nina fits the white swan perfectly but lily is the personification of the black swan. as the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship. nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side- a reckless that threatens to destroy her.

Black Swan( DVD, 2011)

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I bought this DVD because I am a fan of Director Darren Aronofsky, and the talents of Natalie Portman and Vincent Cassell. I loved the movie, the thematic elements and storyline, and the Special features. This product was worth the time and effort. This movie was one of the Nominees for Best Pictureof 2010. Ms. Portman did win Best Actress Oscar for 2010 from her performance in this movie, "The Black Swan".

Black Swan

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a really great movie. The music, dancing, and acting were all amazing and Natalie Portman blew me away with her acting and transformation into the Black Swan. I've always generally like Natalie Portman as an actress, but this was by far the best acting I've seen from her in that I only saw the character, not the actress. And as for the XXX comment, there was no actual nudity that I can recall and only one brief steamy scene with Natalie and Mila (I wouldn't allow my younger children to watch that one scene), but I've seen way more explicit stuff on basic cable and the scene did actually tie into the story line. If you like psychological thrillers, this is a good one.

Review For: Black Swan (Blu-ray Disc, 2011, 2-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy)

Very good movie, Makes you think.. and very suspenseful. I bought this movie after being told by many that it was a very good movie. Natalie Portman played a very convincing part which keeps you on your toes at all points of the movie. Rep from The New Your Post gave this movie 4 Stars **** but I believe it deserves a 5 Star rating ***** for sure.

A ballet dancer's descent into mental illness

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a brilliant piece of film-making. Natalie Portman's performance is incredible.I cannot honestly give it less than 5 stars. However, be forewarned: this is not a sweet ballet movie, despite the authentic setting behind-the-scenes at a ballet company. This is a film about a ballet dancer who craves the role of Swan Queen. When she finally gets it, the pressure to be perfect drives her crazy --- literally. Neither the audience, nor Nina herself (Portman) can tell what is real and what is Nina's delusion. This is fascinating but not what I'd call enjoyable. I'd compare it to watching a suicidal person jump off a cliff. You KNOW she's going to crash on the rocks below, and you know it won't be pretty, but you keep watching anyway. An explicit lesbian sex scene, some clothed but obvious heterosexual groping, and several scenes of self-mutilation make this appropriate for adults only.
