Movie synopsis
Queen Latifah reprises her role as Gina, who audiences first met in the 2004 sequel to BARBERSHOP. This time she's the owner of her own beauty shop. A widow and single mom, Gina has moved from Chicago to Atlanta so that her daughter Vanessa (the charming Paige Hurd), a piano prodigy, can attend a performing arts school. Mother-in law Paulette (Laura Hayes) and sister-in-law Darnelle (Keisha Knight Pulliam, who played Rudy on THE COSBY SHOW) live with them. The bills are paid by Gina's job at Jorge's (Kevin Bacon) high-end salon, but his obnoxious personality ultimately proves insufferable. Gina quits her job and decides to get a place of her own, securing a loan with some resourceful tactics. Situated squarely in the ghetto and featuring a revolving cast of eccentric characters, the shop's quirky employees provide a constant stream of witty banter. Meanwhile the electrician who lives upstairs (Djimon Hounsou, AMISTAD) slowly wins Gina's heart. Despite challenges, Gina maintains grace, humor, and a magnanimous air that sees her through everything. The ensemble cast of this feel-good comedy at times eclipses its good-natured star, who functions as a den mother to the madness. Andi MacDowell and Mena Suvari play wealthy Atlanta socialites who defect to Gina's shop, while Gospel legend Della Reese also makes an appearance. Bryce Wilson's turn as an ex-convict stylist of questionable sexual orientation provides humor at his expense, while Alicia Silverstone's bumbling black-girl wanna-be is so charming that we forgive her fake accent. Building upon the success of the BARBERSHOP franchise, BEAUTY SHOP holds its own both in its comedic acuity, and in its inspirational story of an underdog who comes out on top through force of will and strength of spirit.

A big miss from the Barber Shop series

Review For: Beauty Shop (DVD, 2009, Spa Cash)

This movie had promise – it came from the same line as Barbershop, the storyline was eerily similar to Bringing Down the House, and the cast was unexpectedly strong: Queen Latifah, Alicia Silverstone, Andie MacDowell, Alfre Woodard, Mena Suvari, Della Reese, and a very funny Kevin Bacon. But the movie got lost in its own clichés and poor writing – giving neither the actor’s or the writer’s the power to carry the movie. Instead, the result was a bland, slow-moving movie that chronicled the struggles and successes of Queen Latifah’s start-up beauty shop.

Beauty Shop could have – and should have – been more than a big cliché; but it was unable to break from the traditional storylines. Queen Latifah is a rebellious hair dresser at the hottest salon in town – after being pushed, she quit and decided to follow her heart and open her own salon… predictably in the heart of the ghetto and with a cast of misfit hairdressers. Latifah valiantly leads her team to success – stealing one client at a time… and next thing you know, it’s the hottest spot in town!

You get my point – the movie was too predictable and too uninteresting. Beauty Shop’s greatest asset is its cast – Kevin Bacon is hilarious, Latifah is solid, Andie MacDowell was pleasantly funny, Alicia Siverstone was bizarrely appropriate, and Mean Suvari was decent. In the end, the writing was bad enough that the entire cast was incapable of saving it… unfortunate, because Barbershop was an excellent movie!

All hail the Queen!!

Review For: Beauty Shop (DVD, 2009, Spa Cash)

Do you like to be entertained? In Beauty Shop, Queen Latifah plays Gina. Gina's dream is to open her own hair shop, but it is not easy at first.

First, she needs a loan. Second, she needs to find a place for her shop. But this is not the only reasons why she needs to do this stuff. She just quit her job because of her boss.

Later, Gina does open her shop but faces one problem after another. It is definitely worth seeing if she solves them all.

I think this movie had some really good acting. This movie will have you laughing all the way through. This comedy is about 1 hour and 45 minutes long and kind of reminds me of Hair Show.

I would definitely recommend buying this to add to your movie collection.

Da Queen Rocks

Review For: Beauty Shop (DVD, 2009, Spa Cash)

Queen Latifah is getting more mainstream like Will Smith...was amazed that she used her own production company to produce this 'barbershop' theme movie...i had no idea women talked about similar things as men do..but they do have an edge on us when is comes to the drama side..the plot was plain but believable...definitely a good start for a newcomer to this scene...and a replay value to boot

Beauty Shop

Review For: Beauty Shop (DVD, 2009, Spa Cash)

Although it isn't my personal favorite Queen Latifah movie, it's a good one! Good message and great to see the underdog come out on top. Charactors are colorful and it's overall clean entertainment.

Beauty Shop

Review For: Beauty Shop (DVD, 2009, Spa Cash)

Have watched Beauty Shop on Cable and wanted it for my home collection. In today's declining economy and depressing news, it is good for the "spirit" to have something to laugh about and enjoy. Laughter is good for the soul and this movie is really funny and enjoyable. The Beauty Shop environment reminded me of one of my old beauty shops and bought back some funny memories regarding operator/client interactions.
