| Synopsis | |
| It's summer on Nantucket, and as the season begins, three women trying to escape their problems arrive at the local airport. Soon Josh, a local boy home from college, enters their lives, becomes a confidante, and, eventually, something more. Three women arrive at the local airport, observed by Josh, a Nantucket native home from college for the summer. Burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues, the women--two sisters and one friend--make their way to the sisters' tiny cottage, inherited from an aunt. They're all trying to escape from something: Melanie, after seven failed in-vitro attempts, learned her husband was having an affair, and then discovered she's pregnant; Brenda embarked on a passionate affair with an older student that got her fired from her prestigious job as a professor in New York; and her sister Vicki, mother to two small boys, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Soon Josh is part of the chaotic household, acting as babysitter, confidant, and, eventually, lover. | |

So far...out of the 3 other books by Elin that I have read, I still like this one the best. It was the first one I read and its my favorite still. The characters were funny, true to life - pretty much - and I could see myself in each of the women. I just wish I had the chance to spend a summer on Nantucket, as these characters do. Since it is a real place, not fictional, the pictorial way the author describes it - I would love to go!!!
I just discovered this author and really enjoy reading her books. The story lines and people could very well be true to life . After reading one of her books I would like to read all of her novels. I like her settings, would love to spend a summer in Nantucket after reading her books.
This was the first Elin Hilderbrand book I read...just randomly picked it up one day and have since fallen in love with her style. With the setting in Nantucket and the way she uses the island almost as a character, I just want to pack and bag and head north. I love the descriptive details, but yet don't get bogged down in every shell found on land.
The characters in the book were believable and visible in my mind's eye. I just wanted to be there in their lives. A great read, whether you are on a beach yourself or just waiting at the local car wash.
I had previously read Summer Affair and liked the style of writing so I decided to buy Barefoot and was not disappointed at all. This is a very good author. Can't wait to read the rest of them!
I enjoy Elin Hilderbrands writing and have read all of her books. E bay offers a great way to purchase new novels at half the price.Barefoot is a great book, a quick read and very entertaining-not too sad, not too mushy-just the perfect balance.I will,no doubt, read it again.I highly recommend this book as well as her other books(my personal favorite-Nantucket Nights).Enjoy her books-they are excellent!!
