I remember being mesmerized by Bambi at the drive in as a kid in the early 70's, and then again on TV but, what a fantastic restoration.
It's a good family movie, one that everyone enjoys.
I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed it, and how it dealt with such topics as the death of a mother. I have the laserdisc version of Bambi that was released a few years ago, and I was truly surprised that the picture on the DVD was even better than the remastering that was done for the laserdisc.
Disney, in my opinion, has stepped up to the plate as a serious contender for top DVD production studio. The extras here are what really make this DVD shine. One of the stars on this title is a 70-minute documentary where the audience is treated to Walt Disney and his staff discussing how this film should look. I was stunned at the clarity of the audio tracks of Walt Disney and his staff as they discussed each major scene in the movie. This could have been presented simply as a commentary track, instead Disney chose to present the information in the format of a documentary where movie clips, storyboards, and conceptual artwork are used to enhance what is being discussed in the audio portion. This was unlike any other documentary I've ever seen on the production of a movie. It was truly fascinating to hear Walt Disney describe how he envisioned a scene, and as we are listening to him, the scene is playing, and we see how closely the finished product is to what must have been inside Walt's mind.
One of the things that Disney does better than any other studio is to provide age-appropriate extras on DVD. What I mean by that is that they realize that although Bambi will appeal to children, there are also serious collectors of classic films who will also purchase this title. Other studios could learn a lot by observing how Disney produces DVD's such as Bambi (producers of Harry Potter films on DVD especially). Instead of providing only a lot of fun and games to appease the kids, they also provide enough meat here to satisfy any serious collector. This is evident when Disc 2 is inserted and the main menu has three choices: Deleted Scenes, Backstage Disney , and Fun & Games. I think these are self-explanatory as to what they are. Although I didn't spend a lot of time with the games, they did seem to be something that would appeal to children, and they are easy to navigate. What I was interested in was the Backstage Disney section where we have a 53-minute documentary of the making of Bambi. There are also some vintage materials that are interesting to watch.
I think that Bambi is a perfect DVD with plenty of things to keep the kids busy, and substantial extras for the serious collector. If you enjoy classic films and love quality extras, then this is definitely a DVD that should be in your library.
When I bought this DVD, I bought it for myself, not for my children who are grown up. I love this movie. I love the animal characters, especially Thumper. I love the animation, which when you think about the time it was made and how realistic it is, it is fantastic! The thunderstorm is especially realistic to me and I remember being a little bit frightened by it the first time I saw it. I still tear-up when Bambi's mother dies, and I do recommend watching this movie with your children the first time they see it because of this scene. It is life and a learning tool, but for those who have never seen the movie, there is no blood and it happens off screen. It is a great story of the life cycle, birth, growing, death, and birth. Classic Disney all the way.
On one level, "Bambi" is just a little, animated film, just under 70 minutes, that tells the story of an orphaned deer growing up. Right? And an acorn is just a nut.
"Bambi" was made in 1942, but is still impressive in its animation, even in comparison to the computer-generated graphics of today. The colors are so lush, that you want to freeze some of the frames and hang them up on your wall. The beauty of Nature is captured here as well as in any film, animated or not.
"Bambi" is the story of one deer, but it is also a case study in the very basics of life: parental love, loss and grief, friendship, loyalty, balancing risk and need, growing toward independence, being at one and in harmony with Nature, and romantic love. It is a small film that covers more ground than many epic, megabuck productions.
Another great Walt Disney DVD that you want to add to your collection!
Bambi has been my all time favorite Disney movie since I was a little girl. I still cry when Bambi's mother dies. This is one of the 1st stories to explain the circle of life to a younger generation. I won the 2-disc platinum edition. This move is out of print, and has been locked away. I liked the fact it is OOP/BV stamped and contains the Bueuna Vista stamp. Now I have to decide if I am going to watch it or keep it as a collectors item. Either way, I would recomend anyone who has never seen this movie to get a copy. Make some popcorn. Get the family together, and make it one of those ,so hard to find, quality times. :)
