I purchased this DVD recorder to transfer my home video tapes to DVD, since I didn't want them going bad on me. So far I have been able to do some recording on RW discs, but am having trouble with using -R discs. It will let me record on them, but when I try to play them back it tells me it is a bad disc or is not formatted. I have tried Maxell and Memorex, but I want to try Sony. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. The VCR part works great and the digital tuner is nice. I have yet to try any + discs to see how it works. I try to buy small Quanitys so if they don't work it's less loss. So far if I have to buy DVD-RW to record on I am happy. Not as easy to use as a VCR, but worth it.
The recorder writes to DVD plus and minus disk. It also has firewire connection for DV camcorder recording. It's quite easy to operate with the intuitive remote. Composite (RCA jack) cables are provided, component cables are not, but if you are smart you can use another set of RCA cables if that is all you have available. Can record from laptop, or another DVD player, to backup your personal DVD's. Record to versatile AVI format. Over the past 10 years, I've had DVD recorders from six different manufacturer's, all of which cost more. This RCA does as much, or more, than the others, and is as easy to operate, if not easier. It isn't Blu-Ray, but I feel I'm getting more than what I paid for. Plus, if you don't have a digital HDTV television set, you can use this recorder to pick up those signals. It'll save you the cost of a digital converter box, and for a few dollars more you've got a VHS/DVD player/recorder, that plays and records, to and from both. Snap open the little door to the additional connections on the front face, making it easy to connect a video camera, or other devices, without moving the unit.
Simple programming, on screen display made understanding the format to recording live TV or VHS to DVD.
The price made me decide. One-third the cost of a new VHS/DVR.
Refurbished at the factory, hopefully it will be better than off the shelf.
Downloading my digital and video cameras directly onto DVD-R from a convenient access door in front of the unit.
I still have to use another DVD player to record a DVD to DVD.
Installation simple RCA, S-Video, or coxial.
Figured out operation using the remote and controls are easily located on the front.
This was a refurbished DVD recorder/VCR combo. Had it about 2 weeks and it would not let me record a taped tv show to a DVD, kept saying I had bad DVD's. It finally recorded one and when I stopped the recording it locked up and the recorded DVD had nothing on it. Even said a DVD from Netflix was a bad disc, which we ended up watching through our portable DVD player on our regular tv (worked just fine). Also taped a tv show on VHS and the playback was fuzzy and the voices were distorted. Called the company with 2 days left on our 30 warranty and now it is in the mail to get repaired. Should have just spent $200 on a brand new one, instead of wasting $100 on this unit. Now have spent another $20 to ship it in to get it fixed. My opinion this unit is junk.
I have had this now for more than three months. I rated this Good!. The problem I found is with the set up of the machine. If you want to use the auto record for instance. Using the Dish to turn on the machine it only burns the DVD and won't go to the VHS. There is no way to override this. Next if your watching a program and the Recorder turns on five minutes prior and every minute the screen blockes out and tells you 5 min till recording starts and you have to press OK to view what it is your watching. You have to due this every minute. There are advantages to this Machine. One is that you don't need a converter box to get the conversion from HD TO Analogue signal its built in. The next thing is it has many connection points front and rear. I have had no problems with the functioning of this Unit. Works as it is supposed too As long as your using on a new TV that doesn't need a RF Modulator to make it work. This Unit does not have the switch to use channel 3 or 4 so it goes on the TV. So Beware if you have a analogue TV you will need a RF Modulator I got mine here on Ebay I give this unit a 8 out of 10. Good unit Would I buy it again. NO. Too difficult to use for me. That's my preference but it does burn a awesome DVD. and if your on HD with a new TV Go Fore it but for the old TV's buy one with less functions if your just trying to use the UHS like me. Thanks for Reading.
