Atari Flashback 2 Review

Created: 11/08/10
I like the flashack II I love the Joysticks I like the /|\ symbol on the joysticks and that they are exactly the same size but the rubber remote control/like carbon buttons on the joysticks are a improvment to the dome switches that crak in time but the joysticks feel the same as the old ones in play and are just as good ..
A nother Thing I like about the Flashback II is the fact that you can do a cart mod to it to take REAL Atari(r) (NON BANKSWITCHED) cartridges if you can solder and under stand the switch its like two switches in one built in or cart mode one jumper shorts while the other opens for cart games but opens and shorts the opposite for built in games The only thing I dont like is the hacked version of Yars revenge locks up on my game when playing and asteroids deluxe flips But other than that the Value is always A good deal since the JOYSTICKS HAVE THE EXACT PIN OUTS AS THE ORIGINAL 2600 does.. ALSO in the menu you can push
1 9 7 2 up 1 down 9 times up 7 times and down 2 times and a PADDLE MENU WILL SHOW UP for two paddle games Warlords and a pong varient and it will work W ORIGINAL PADDLE's also if the cart mod is done it WILL work w INDY 500 or
SEARS Telegames RACE and the driving paddles .. The only thing that sucks is it wont run Pitfall II IT does run some hacks from atari age I was able to make my own cartridge using a old atari Cart by removing the chip then I had to rewire 3 wires and using a 7404 (LS7404) chip and only 4 pins on the 7404 I rewired the cart a little to read a 2732 0r up to 27256 chip and I got it to run
HACK EM a pacman type game from a Atari age Author of a homebrew game I didnt think it would run but it did also I made my own version of asteroids and space invaders and my own carts they All work on the Flashack II w mod
here is the link to how i did mine I used a Old 4 switch Atari that was toast to put the modded flashback II into I used the Black and WHite switch to switch between carts and the built in memmory cause it was a single pole double pole switch while one is on the other side can be off this is what made it work...
the 1st attempt i had it reversed on one but got it to work.. then the ch3 ch4 switch I just used for the b/w color switch it looks like a normal atari but can have the built in games and the carts too! ALL in ALL its a really good deal I also like the NEW version of Adventure II its actually fun the bat actually flys the same ans the old one.. ALSO on the Adventure II game you can select black and white option and it will show the walls in the mazes but you cant tell what color they are so you can switch back and forth ..
I give Exellent Rating exept for that the power pack is a little whimpy and that they could have tested asteroids deluxe more w normal tv's w the agc and the amount of scanlines and the yars game locks up otherwise I like the games AND that they Included Pitfall Activision River Raid witch are fun games. Also I like that they got a 400/800(xl) game CAVERNS OF MARS was only avalible on Atari800 to run on the Flashack II as its own version..
PS .. if you do the mod a cool thing to do is put REAL Missile Command Cart in cart slot then put FB to built in mode then start Missile command and switch between both games or start in adventure 1 then switch to Missile command and it does weird thing like all smart bombs comming from bottom up and other weird efffects.. REMEMBER dont flash w power switch also if you hold reset then turn on FB you get test menu.

The flashback system sure is affordable and convenient to play. No having to switch cartridges for example. ask yourself though, why are you buying a flashback system? Well, it is in the name. you want to have a flashback of your childhood memories. You will get those from the flashback system but if you want the real flashback then you should buy a real vintage atari 2600 system.

They are very affordable on ebay and you get the true childhood experience over again! Selecting cartridges and inserting them manually is half the fun!! You will soon have the itch to add to your collection of games and find that you have to get a bigger shoe box so you can expand your collection. That is where it is at!!!! Stick to the original console for the true flashback!!!!

Atari Flashback 2

Created: 05/05/10
This is a great system for fans of the old school Atari games. There are some really popular ones such as Centipede, Pitfall, Missile Command, and Yar's Revenge. Another cool feature is an unreleased game (Frog Pond) is also available on this system. The main drawback, though, is that most of the games are not popular. Frog Pond is cool since it was unreleased, but the game itself is rather boring and the kids were waiting for it to end. Expect to see about 8-10 really good retro games and the rest are more "filler" to get to 40 games. It is a LOT like the original Atari cartrige games. The box would state something like "20 games," but they were really all the same game with 19 variations (1 player, two player, 3 lives, 5 lives, etc.). Overall, this is a fun system for those of us who had the original Atari 2600, but don't expect to get 40 awesome games.

In summary
Pros
-There are several really cool retro games
-The system does a great job of playing games that, at one time, were $20 - $40 each
-The controllers are just like the 2600 controllers
-It is very easy to set up and play - no RF switch needed, just red/yellow audio and video plugs

Cons
- Many of the games are not very interesting and are really just designed to allow the manufacturers to market the system with 40 games
- Not all of the games can be two-players

Atari Flashback System WOW! Very Cool!

Created: 10/29/08
I love this system. It has all my favorite classic Atari Games built right in. No cartridges to hunt for and buy or exchage when you want to play something different. The joysticks have the original Atari feel and make gameplay more enjoyable.

It's exactly the same yet totally different

Make no mistake about my review, I think you get exactly what Atari promises, any dis-satisfaction won't be their fault.
The thought of playing those old school games is great, those memories of your childhood, a time long ago......Don't let "the good old days" fool you. Yes the games are the same ones, the controllers look the same, and the console does look similar. The controllers feel very cheap, much much lighter than the originals, the console itself is small, light, and screams "low cost". This no doubt due to the evolution of technology, even though it works perfect, my first though when I touch it is: cheap. If you love old school, this is as old as you can get without getting an original 2600. Be warned, if you are buying it because of nastalga, it won't take long to remember why you didn't have to have a 2600 five years ago.
It's like parking you new car, and buying a '71 Pinto because of all the good times you had with yours. It won't take long before you remember why you sold you Pinto in the first place.
My kids wanted this, and since they saved their own money, they got it. I hooked it up to test it, it works, and that is they only contact I needed.
I'm sure it will joint the other "have to get" obsolete systems box very quickly.
Move over N64, make room Sega Dreamcast, get out of the way PS1, there is a new "old" game in town.
It is exactly the same, yet totally different.
It delivers on all it's promises, any disappontments, aren't because of the system, it's because we remember things were greater than they really.
