Art Glass: Identification & Price Guide by John A. Shuman III and John Shuman (2003, Paperback)

I seek dependable information that is written by an individual who knows how to write. Mr. Shuman has established his reputation on the subject of Art Glass. THE COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN ART GLASS, his 1988 study of the major antique art glass forms in the United States, illustrates research skills, excellent and well chosen written emphases, appropriate editing-down of information, and among the finest color photography that I have seen in a glass reference work.

Not to be outdone by himself, John Shuman's ART GLASS IDENTIFICATION & PRICE GUIDE (2003) provides exactly what one seeks in terms of European and other art glass. Again, the writing, its straight-forward conciseness, and the quality of the photographs are outstanding! John Shuman ranks among the most important presenters of Western antique art glass.

The American glass market follows predictable cycles in terms of what forms are enjoying currency. Nineteenth and early twentieth century Art Glass designs are experiencing a wider collecting clientele. I bought Shuman's books because I wanted to stay fresh with the subject - and because I was settling, to my advantage, a disagreement with a friend. (And admittedly, the photos are "eye candy" for someone like me who has studied the market for years and who completely understands the evolving aesthetic form, material and style of each glass house.)

Was there any disappointment with either book? Yes, there were a few typographical errors in each book - just a few, but enough for me to wonder about the seriousness of those who are responsible for making a book one hundred and ten percent! However, these very few errors do not diminish the excellence of these great books by John A. Shuman III. Every serious collector should own both of them.

I recommend this book for anyone who admires, collects, buys and/or sells art glass. It is a marvelous book - filled with all kinds of useful information plus countless photos of gorgeous items. A must have for lovers of glass and much, much more. I enjoy reading mine often - and appreciate the valuable information, important values and superb photographs.

I like that every piece of glass that I have is described in this book. I like the fact that there is detailed information about each item in the book. I like the detailed pictures that the book displays.
