Unassuming store clerk Ash (Bruce Campbell) is time-warped into England's Dark Ages, where he must find the Necronomicon, a compendium of the black arts, before he can return home. Tongue in cheek horror that is sure to please!

Army Of Darkness (AKA: Evil Dead 3) is the final chapter in the Evil Dead saga. All 3 film are very loosely tied together. In fact, 1 & 2 are just retellings of the same story, but I digress. The films became campier with each one & this is by far the campiest of the bunch. But it still has it's moments of pure terror as well.

AOD picks up where #2 left off, sort of. Ash (Bruce Campbell) is back in the real world working at his job at "S Mart". He tells a hot fellow employee a tale about a terrifying adventure he has had. We switch to Ash being led with other medieval soldiers, chained together prisoners of Lord Arthur, a medieval warlord. Obviously, we are back in time just as the 2nd film left us. But instead of being a hero as the 2nd film led us to believe, Ash is just a prisoner. He redeems himself & is set free. He goes on a quest to find The Book Of The Dead, which medieval wizards have told him will send him back to his own time. The bumbling Ash of course screws this up & releases The Deadites, who lay siege to Arthur's castle. If they get the book, the world will be plunged into darkness.

Campbell is of course ultra cool throughout the film, even when he is screwing things up. He offers forth many quips & catch phrases that are part of everyday life know. The film bounces back & forth between true terror & tongue in cheek silliness worthy of the old 3 Stooges. In fact, many of the gags are straight from The Stooges.

Campbell is supported by a solid cast of no names who play along with him well for the length of the film. The only real name player is Embeth Davidtz who plays love interest Sheila. Probably one of the most interesting facts about this film is that it lists Bridget Fonda as a star. In fact, Fonda only makes the briefest appearance at the beginning of the film, as Ash's girlfriend Linda, while Ash is retelling his tale. Other than that, she plays no part in the movie. It is unsure why she even bothered to do this, her career was already well underway?

Another interesting point concerning this film is that this is the original theatrical version. There is a director's cut available with a far different beginning & ending to it that really changes the whole scope of the film from the whimsical theatrical version to a much more somber director's version. I much prefer the theatrical.

Despite the humor, which will be way over their heads anyway, this is really not a film for young viewers as it features plenty of violence & adult language & situations. Fans of the legendary Bruce Campbell already have this film in their libraries, but for those of you teetering on the fence, this film will show you what all the excitement is about! As Campbell says in his lectures, there will NEVER be another Evil Dead sequel so this is it people! For fun & fear, it just doesn't get any better than this! Remember; "Shop Smart, Shop S Mart!"

Army of Darkness - US Theatrical Release DVD

Ask any splatoon afficiando worth his salt and he'll tell you without the slightest hesitation that this particlar flick is the "Citizen Kane" of our generation. Although several versions of Army of Darkness are in circulation, this one makes a great gift for newbies if you're turning them onto the genre for the first time.

Although the Boomstick Edition is more befitting for the experienced Evil Dead fanatic, the U.S. Theatrical Release eases the newcomer into the water, and provides them with a sound basis in Campbellology. Taking an ED virgin and hitting them with the original Evil Dead is like showing up for Driver's Ed class in highscool and finding out that you'll be driving a Formula One at Indy that day; sure it's possible, but the average Joe just couldn't cope and would implode.

In a perfect world, Bruce Campbell would be at his ranch polishing his Academy Awards at this very moment. Unfortunately, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science has a tendency to favor crap like "Chariots of Boredom" and "Million-Dollar Labia".

If you haven't seen this flick, drop what you're doing and get it NOW! Watch chainsaw-wielding Ash retrieve the Necronomicon, hack the deadites and nail the Princess all in one day while cracking wise simultaneously. This is also Sam Raimi's breakout flick and the one that transitioned him from King of Low Budget Horror to King of High Budget everything.

I can honestly say I've seen the movie more than 200 times and while that may seem excessive please keep in mind that it keeps me off the streets. The out-takes and alternative ending are just as amazing as what was left in the film and strangely enough, the other night the film was featured on AMC (American Movie Classics) right along side Citizen Kane and Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart. Can I call it or what?

Oh yeah, one more thing.

Hail to the King Baby.

The best version to get!!!

To date there have been six region one DVD releases of Army of Darkness, most have been OOP for a while now but if you are searching for the best version to buy this is it right here. The Army of Darkness 2-Disc Special Edition by Anchor Bay has both the Theatrical Cut (82-min) & Director's Cut (96-min) on separate discs so you can enjoy both versions of the film and not have to buy two different versions. The only downside is that the picture is not the clearest version you could get, do not get me wrong this is still the best copy out there I am just saying compared to how clean and clear the studio release films today then ten years ago you will notice a difference.

Screwheads and Boomsticks

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The final installment in THE EVIL DEAD trilogy takes the complete 180-degree turn from blood-spattering horror to the exciting swordplay of the Ray Harryhausen epics.

S-Mart housewares clerk Ash Williams (The one and only Bruce Campbell) accidently travels back to the English Dark Ages where he romances a beautiful maiden (Embeth Davidtz, SCHINDLER'S LIST), fights guastly KNB-created beasts, and battles his evil counterpart's Army of the Dead over the Necronomicon.

But can Ash get back to his own time?

The only answer would be to watch both the theatrical cut (Widescreen & Full Screen) and the director's cut (Widescreen)in order to decide which version is better.

Extras include: Audio commentary with director Sam Raimi, Campbell, and co-writer Ivan Raimi (Director's Cut only), original ending, THE MEN BEHIND THE ARMY featurette narrated by Campbell, 15 minutes of additional footage, four deleted scenes, storyboards, talent bios, & trailer.
