Arabian nights is a movie that was made for tv that came out in 2000.It stars Mili Avital (Stargate Movie) as Scheherazade a woman who marries the sultan played by dougray scott(ever after),a childhood friend thats going insane from the betrail of his former wife and his brother. She knows that he plains to kill her after their wedding night to make sure he is not betrayed again. To distract him of his plains, and to calm his nightmares and fears, she tells him a different story every night. The story of ALADDIN played by Jason scott Lee with John Leguizamo playing 2 different genies,As well as other storys with rufus sewell(a knights tale)Tcheky Karyo(kiss of the dragon),Andy Serkis(the lord of the rings), and James Callis(Battlestar Galactica).I love the great mix of drama and comedy through out, with great story telling of fantasy. The way the people of real life are used is some of the stories and the characters them selves. There was nothing i didn't like about this movie, and the fact that it was a tv movie impresses me.
I wanted to see what sort of performance Dougray Scott would give in a movie of a different nature. Granted he is a talented and i felt he gave an admirable performance as the Sultan who couldn't trust his own shadow. One thing that put me off though was the accent, both his and Sheherazade's accents were awful - he sounds much like his characters from movies such as MI2, ever after etc.
Pronunciation of the Arabic language was really awful. Simple words like harem and Allah (God) were horribly mispronounced.
The special effects were awful but i suspect that was probably because of a minute budget. John Leguizamo did a great job as both Genies, specially the part where the 2 of them are groaning about their familial relations - was laughing my socks off.
I was surprised to see Andy Serkis in the lineup and wondered how i had missed him since the Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of my favorite films of all time.
Mili's Sheherazade physically was beautiful and somewhat believable in her role, i wish she had been more expressive though since Dougray Scott (accent aside) portrayed the anguished sultan to perfection.
All in all a fun, silly movie to watch if you need to get your mind off something :-) Enjoy !
I saw this series on TV in two parts and been looking for DVD version ever since. The DVD version did not look like it was hacked in parts but rather into a 175 minutes movie. I don't think any part was missing nor was quality bad. This did not have English subtitle but does come with closed caption. I love everything about it, the actors and actresses, the intense storytelling, the costumes and the 'mortal lessons'.
This version of Arabian Nights is one of the best on the market. My family has enjoyed this for literally years and continues to enjoy it. Now that the family is grown up...it still is a family classic and everybody wants their own copy to enjoy. Long movie, funny, mysterious, a little scarey for children under say 7 years of age but not anything they wouldn't see on TV today or at the movies. However, I would definitely monitor as a parent. Enjoy.
Mind blowing adventure and extraordinary special effects set against the backdrop of mysterious Arabia make this an exhilarating trip though the grandest adventures of all time.
