I've had some time to use my 5th Gen iPod Touch (I got the black) and I like it. On the surface it doesn't seem like much improvement over my 4th Gen model except it is longer, but after playing around with it I can explain the differences.
The 5G is definitely lighter than the 4G. The steel back of the previous model feels archaic compared to the sleek aluminum casing on the 5G. The extra 1/2" of screen real estate does not sound like much, but being the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S2 I'm accustomed to using a larger screen and I can say that the 4G iPod Touch's screen was definitely too small. The 5G seems about right, not too big or small. It can be used for one handed operation in portrait mode.
The retina screen is better than the 4G Touch which would suffer from yellow discoloration when viewed off angle. The 5G Touch screen does suffer when viewed off angle, but just becomes dimmer and the color does not lose integrity. Looking at other reviews I've noticed others have complained about a yellow tint but I have not experienced this. I had pre-ordered the Silver model.
The screen actually feels much more responsive and accurate than the 4G. It almost feels like Apple increased the touch sensitivity. Knowing what kind of improvement in technology Apple made, I know that the increase in sensitivity is likely due to improvements in hardware, not software. The layer that receives your touch input is now much closer to the surface, I think this is why the screen feels more responsive.
The camera is much improved over the 4G. I can honestly consider using the 5G iPod Touch as a cheap replacement camera. The functionality has improved as well. iOS 6 offers a foolproof Panorama feature that allows you to take Panoramic pictures. My previous phone (HTC Amaze) also had this feature but it was not implemented nearly as well.
As you operate the panorama feature, the app will tell you to slow down, move up or down, in order to make the picture. It even shows you in a smaller picture, where the camera is in the process of making the panorama so you can see if you are half way done, or are almost done making the picture. I would say the panorama is close to 270 degrees, not quite a 360 degree panorama.
Also improved is the ability to share pictures on the fly (if you have wifi connection). You can click on the picture, then share, then compose the email. A window will pop up telling you how large the email message is and give you options to scale down the image so that it will not take up so much space, a very nifty feature indeed. Another nice touch is you can use the Vol Up/Down button to take the picture which is much more ergonomically friendly.
The faster processor has been a blessing. I like to play Virtua Tennis and the 4G iPod Touch was unable to play this game without slowing and freezing up. The 5G Touch has no problems running this game which is a relief. I feel like this device can pretty much take anything I throw at it. I am playing a game of 'Words With Friends'. I downloaded it for my Galaxy S2 phone and my iPod Touch. The iPod Touch's version looks much better, the tiles are actually transparent so you can see if a Triple Letter or Double Word was used or not. The tiles for Android system are solid so you can't see anything underneath them.
The Lightening connector makes it easier to plug and recharge. It doesn't matter which way you plug it in, it will work.
The coloured new iPod touch 5th generation is a very different looking beast to the previous model, which had a metallic silver back with tapered edges. While the metallic back initially looked nice it was a magnet for smudges and fingerprints.
With the iPhone 5 you get a wall charging plug in the box with your Lightning to USB cable, but no such luck with the iPod touch 5th Generation, so just bear that in mind.
Inside the box you'll find some of the new Apple EarPods earphones – while still not comparable with noise-isolating in-ear solutions these new earbuds are still a huge improvement over the previous Apple earphones, with much better bass frequencies.
The iPod touch 5th Generation feels nippy to use, and this responsiveness is one of its big advantages over the many different flavours of Android devices. But it's the App Store that's the real differentiator – apps in iOS just seems to look a little bit better, and the quality and range of apps is fantastic.
It's worth noting just how versatile an iPod touch is – there's so much you can do with it, from playing music and movies to FaceTime video chat (thanks to a second front facing 1.2 megapixel, 720p, camera).
The 4th gen had a poor 5 mega-pixel rear-facing camera capable of only 720p video recording and 960 x 720 still photos with no flash.
The new iPod touch features a much improved iSight camera – it's still 5 mega-pixels, but with a better 5 element lens capable of much better still shots and 1080p video recording and a flash.
There's no doubt that Apple has done the right thing by upping the display to 4-inches, the new iPod touch still feels like a modern, desirable device, but the question remains, with so many other full and medium-sized tablets, including the new 7.9-inch iPad mini on the market, is a 4-inch device still relevant?
The new iPod touch colours are fun, the bigger 4-inch screen is a real improvement and the Retina display looks as gorgeous as ever. There's no compromise here – this is the exact same display that you get on an iPhone 5. We also prefer the flatter back to the device, and the new iSight camera is a huge improvement.
The camera is good enough to use as your primary camera and 1080p video recording is a great addition. The new strap is actually pretty handy to have as well. In terms of ease of use, iOS still has the edge over Android, especially once you start using the iCloud facilities.
With its bigger screen and new iSight camera the iPod touch 5th Generation is certainly the best iPod touch ever, and a big step up; it's a much bigger jump from the iPod touch 4th Generation to this than it is from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5, for example. If only Apple hadn't just released the brand new iPad mini we'd be rushing to buy the new iPod touch. Now we're thinking it's looking a bit late to the party.
Super fast processing, great clarity on the screen! Bought it mainly for the camera and it's been working out great. Photo editing and sharing (via. FaceBook, instragram, etc.) is super easy!
32 GB is plenty for lots of photos and even music, especially if you don't use too many apps.
The 5 megapixel camera is better than on the iPhone 4, and has better low-light photography than iPhone 4S. Also comes standard with the panorama feature.
With a longer screen than previous generations (now using the same screen as iPone 5), mobile gaming is much easier if that's your thing. Retina display makes for great graphics, and the processor runs any of the games smoothly.
Build quality is top notch. The body is extremely slim and light, but is still very durable and scratch resistant.
pretty awesome! i bought this mostly to be able to use free text/calls through the wi-fi(i don't want a phone bill...lol)! another reason i bought this was to load all my music on it to be able to play any favorite song in my car (hooked up to car stereo). i also enjoy that it has a decent camera (total upgrade from the previous 4th generation..no comparison, really) with flash (also something the previous model didn't have). the video is also upgraded from 720hd to 1080p. i like filming random stuff so this is perfect and great quality. video quality is sometimes shaky because of the auto focus (not sure if you can turn off that feature). you can also turn the flash on/off while recording video, which is awesome. you also have access to all the cool apps (some free)...instagram, facebook, etc.. i also like that the screen is bigger on this new 5th generation. it's very thin and lightweight...easy to throw in your pocket. i have to say this thing is pretty durable. if you're trying to decide between 4th or 5th generation, it's a no-brainer...get the 5th generation (if you don't have enough money for the 5th generation...keep saving, because this is the model you'll want)!!
This product was a Valentine's Day gift for the wife. Average battery life for an iProduct. Basically this is a iPhone 5 without the phone. With that being said, you will need an internet connection of some sort...whether that is wifi, direct connect, or the like. She uses her GT-i9300's hotspot when not at home on the wifi to serf the web, FB, send *text messages, etc. *NOTE: not cross platform compatible. In other words, can only send texts to other iPhones, iPods, iPads, etc. She can not text my Samsung GT-i9300 from this unit.
Massive amount of storage for movies and music. Plus the back of the unit is metal and not glass like with the iPhone for a bit more durability. Also, it is the hot pink color that my wife loves.
The screen is smaller than the GT-i9300, so some of the same game/apps look a little different on this screen, but appear to play the same. You can also check your email accounts, keep memos, navigation and there is also a pretty good camera/video feature.
Overall, not bad. The wife still prefers her cell phone, but this was a purchase mainly for music and movie storage. Solid so far and no crashes to report. Just really, really pricey...but then all iProducts are. Nothing I would buy for myself, but the wife enjoys it.
On a side note, get ready to buy new data/charge cables. This one uses an 8-pin vs. the 32 pin connectors currently in use for just about all iPhone/iPods out there. Also, your current iDock may not work for this generation, so do some homework. My wife's iBoo will charge this unit with an adapter only, but music will NOT play music. Research, research, research so that you understand what you are getting into. Finally, memory capacity is great, but is NOT expandable...so make sure you purchase enough GB's right out of the box, depending on what you are using the iPod for. This is the largest one available.
