I'm an android man, so google is my team, and apple are the opposition. Given that, this must lend some gravity to me saying that the iPod touch is just freaking excellent. I got one for myself last year, and, once the operating system made it less reliant on a computer, I have enjoyed having enough music for any occasion, apps like I would have on a phone, with all the usefullness that entails, t.v. shows and movies, and shops at my finger tips, to get more when the occasion warrants it. I used it on holidays as a surprisingly good stills and video camera. It's elegant slim size fits easily in a shirt or jeans pocket, in a way that phones can only dream about. It tethers easily to my phone, so I can use all of its on line features where ever I choose. Because Apple makes only an iPad, iPod, iPhone etc , developers find it easier to make accessories for them than other devices, which are varied, and don't sell in anywhere near the same numbers. The same goes for apps, and the appStore. Finally, it is easy to use. It doesn't have much in the way of customization options, which for some will be a strength, and for others, a weakness, but does make it a no brainer to use.
Why did I buy this when I already had one? Does this indicate that it's unreliable, and needed replacing? No, it its absolutely reliable, but in my case, was the object of envy. Some friends were so impressed by it, that they wanted their own, and when I told them about face time, where you can talk face to face online with a friend that has an iPod, iPad, or iPhone, they were sold. I could have sent them to Big W, who had brand new ones for just over $300, but when I saw that there were refurbished ones with a warranty for less, I chose this. This may seem a bit strange, but my logic was, a new one should be good, but may have a problem that requires warranty ( as unlikely as this is ), but a refurbished one has had any bugs dealt with, and has been tested to make sure that it's fit for resale.
If I had to make a criticism, it would be that the chrome finish looks second hand, but that's because it is, and a cover makes this a non issue. The only other limitation, is that it doesn't take a memory card, but the way iTunes works, that's not the issue it could be.
All told, this is a great device, and you won't be disappointed with it. It's like being able to take all the cool things in your room with you. Your music, movies, t.v., comics, books, magazines, and everything that your smart phone does, without the phone, but face time covers that, and it all fits into something smaller than a phone. As much as I hate to say it, this is a triumph for Apple.
Liked the idea of having a wireless device but live in a part Sydney with sub-optimal cell reception. Not wanting to sacrifice the superior phone capability of my old "dumb phone" the 4thG ipod Touch was a good compromise.
Pros:
* It runs the latest iOS as the Iphone 4/4S; all the same apps (except phone ones natch)
* When paired with a mobile wifi device, gives you all the on-the-go internet capability of an iphone at a cheaper price and without the long term contract.
* 32GB is enough memory for medium level use.
Cons:
* This is an Apple iOS product with all of Apple's quirks/charms/annoying/compulsory itunes etc... take it or leave it.
* The iOS on-screen keyboard is inferior to Apple's main smart phone competitor; which can be a problem when writing emails.
* Obviously need to pair this with wifi, otherwise you've paid a lot of money for a tricked up ipod.
Time to get to Australia was about 4weeks but it was during Chinese new year period so to be expected, product was correct & as advertised.
Personally I have never used the product, but my child loves it and with 32GB should take quiet some time to fill up with music
Great iPod, cameras could be better but everything else is excellent. It has more than enough memory for my music and app library.
