This is one of the best Apple purchases I've made. I have a new Retina Display Macbook, and with the processing power of the Macbook with this display is unreal. I am an industrial designer, so having a big screen is key, and when I'm on the road, I have my retina display. Besides, a pixel is just a pixel right?
For designers, photographers and video/audio technicians this is a must have. If you have a Macbook (Air or Pro) then you can utilize two displays, your Macbook's display for your editing tools and the Thunderbolt for the actual workspace. For video/audio technicians, the sound is also incredible.
I'll be honest, at first I was a little leery of this purchase, because of the price, but it was worth every penny. Having this large of a work space with Apple quality features is a lifesaver when it comes to productivity. Thunderbolt technology is where it's at. Just like they claim, it just works. I played with other comparable displays and the quality just didn't touch Apple's.
There is a slight drawback and that's the glare from the glossy glass. This doesn't bother me whatsoever, I find that the LED backlight helps get rid of most, but I've heard others talk about how it bothers them. I suggest you go to an Apple Store or Best Buy and check one out for yourself. Of course glare totally depends on what kind of environment you'll be using the display in also (brighter rooms=more glare).
On a second note, I also recommend checking out some of the 12South accessory products that compliment this display. Setting your Macbook up on a 12South horizontal stand keeps things tidy, away from coffee spills and nice and cool. They also sell a shelf that sits on the back of the display to hold a second drive, or a mounted Macbook Air (won't work with Pro, as it's too heavy), all tucked away behind the display. OR you can use the shelf for your superdrive (front facing). Good stuff. I would recommend this display time and time again.
This is an expensive monitor, but the resolution and quality of this unit is much better than most any others out there. I had checked out a Samsung 1080 27" monitor, but this unit looks WAY better. Bright colors, sharp text, this is what you want in a large monitor. Being able to simply connect my MacBook Pro with one output cable and having a power supply right there is really a nice feature also. I had hoped that Apple would have added USB 3.0 to the unit, but that still hasn't happened. But, come to think if it, the only USB device I own that can benefit from USB 3.0 is an external back up drive. Due to the fact that all of my connections are made on the back of the monitor, it leaves the USB 3.0 ports open on the laptop for this function.
The build quality and screen quality are so far ahead of other products on the market, add the thunderbolt hub functionality to the mix and this is worth the extra money. If you are thinking of skimping and getting something else instead just to save some money, you should just wait and save for one of these. I found a superb deal on this one on eBay and saved $400 off of the Apple price tag, picking up this nice used one that is just as good as new.
This is a great display, and an excellent docking station for my MacBook Air. I have one at work, and bought a secod one for home.
My only gripe is that the USB ports on the display are too slow to effectively use an external keyboard and mouse - they need to be plugged into the MBA USB ports directly, which adds some time every dock. For external peripherals (external drive, printer, etc.) the display's USB ports work fine.
Never fails! Apple has a winner here! Excellent monitor! Best picture quality of any out there! Works as a great docking station for when you bring your laptop home or to work!
