Install a 3rd party media center software like XBMC, pair the device to your WiFi network and hook it up to an HDTV then you'll be facing a nearly perfect media center: Versatile, free local/web content, HD quality, low energy consumption (14-25 watts), upgradeable (3Tb HD external, 1Tb HD internal, hardware accelerated video decoder, learns any remote, you can even run tiger (Mac OS 10.4) on this to run as an Apple desktop PC.
Disadvantages: Limited ram 256mb (not upgradeable), there's no true standby mode, outdated device might stop getting updates soon.
Best: Price; $60 (average) on eBay (1 oct 2011)
Love the !st gen Apple Tvs. I think they're awesome! I like the fact that it has a built in hard drive, so if I travel I can take movies and tv shows with me.
Apple TV 2nd generation are great, but...
This perfect product are cheaper to buy used (in opposite with 160Gb model with same firmware and hardware).
You may found reasonable to pay less and buy this 40Gb 1-st generation Apple TV model and after that buy additional extra 250Gb or 500Gb HDD and replace original 40Gb HDD (please, visit iFixit.com to see how to make this in 30 min.)
For this time (Aug 2011) this Apple TV 40Gb/160Gb 1-st generation model is perfect choice:
1. You may use it "as is" for original Apple Store content, own stored content.
2. You may add simple tool named Boxee(and xbmc) to open a really huge new world of media. And save original Apple "is is" functionality.
3. You may replace internal drive to newest 250/500Gb HDD and add Boxee(and xbmc) and really bite Apple TV 2-nd generation on functionality.
Thank you for Your time!
I find the first Gen Apple TV to be better than the new one. Even though you can rent from netflix, Netflix still doesn't have all the movies you'd like to watch in their streaming library. Plus, the first gen apple TV has the ablity to go with you. with out a internet connection. Great for those RV trips or even the hotel stays with the family.
I bought this product after we had to cut our cable. I only paid 40 dollars for it and that was only half of month of our previous cable. I use it to stream our collection of tv shows and movies from our computers. I also use it so we can watch netflix, hulu, and other services. Stock the product wasn't so great, limited functions, and mostly paid(high price) shows and movies. By adding Boxee we opened a whole new world. I love streaming Pandora while doing chores and then coming back to watch movies on netflix and tv shows straight from the company(cbs, nbc, etc) I don't mind the commericals because, heck we were pretty much paying to watch commericals with cable. I also looked at the Roku box before this purchase. I decided the ATV over Roku and google because I could add Boxee(and xbmc) to increase the features with a limited price.
