I am a long time Mac & PC user. I own a high end pro-audio recording studio and use macs to make money and a pc to count it. This laptop blew away all four of my remaining PC laptops. They'll be on e-bay soon (cheap). This laptop is very fast and was bought at less than a third of the price of the latest model. The speed differential between the latest model and this model is not all that important except to those who are doing very high end video/photo & audio work.
I use three 8-core machines for my high end work. This laptop absolutely can't keep up with them (what could?), but it rocks at everything else! I've even installed Pro-tools HD on it and it works great as a travel studio! This mac just replaced every PC that I own. No viruses, no hanging-up, no spam, no technical difficulties, no mountain of extra software...enough said!
I bought this laptop to start doing some freelance editing. It has decent speed for a traveling computer and I really like the way the keys feel. Great to have Firewire 400 & 800 as well as 3 USB's.
Some cons. Man does this thing get hot! I would not recommend using it as a "lap" top. Also the battery when you buy it used is terrible. Holds about a 2 hour charge when messing around and less than an hour charge when editing. So if you're not by a power source, you're going to die.
But frankly I won this computer for $759... I basically saved nearly $2000 of the original price in the apple store when it first came out. I would recommend this for a person on a tight budget that is looking for something on the cheap. If you have the money, get the brand new MacBook Pro's that have the i5 and the i7's.
The APPLE MacBook Pro (MA611LL/A) is a nice product they say it should be a LOT faster than the G4 note book but, it is NOT that fast as they claim. Overall the product is good but could be faster. I personally own the older G4 Power book and that to me is as comparable with the MacBook Pro inspite of NOT having the Dual Core 2. So if you are using the MAC for just basic work than save the money and get the Power book G4 which I think is the BEST model introduced by APPLE
I have been a PC user all my life and finally got fed up with the crashes and having to reinstall my system on a yearly basis. I do not put a ton of things on my computer, I just used it for gaming. I have had nothing but problems with windows and Microsoft products and my friend told me about his mac book. I decided to look on Ebay to purchase one because I could not afford to buy two machines at 2000 each. My husband would want one as soon I started playing with mine and sure enough he did. I just purchased another Macbook pro for him and all I have to say is hooray! I am so happy with my new apple that I am never going back to pc.
Even though this item is not the newest computer on the market, it still has a lot of life left in it. And though I have not had time to search out all of its capabilities, nor to see yet if it will hold its own against newer technology for all of the up-and-coming programs, but I feel that this machine even outlived Steve Job's dream of the perfect portable. I have honestly wanted a Macbook Pro since I got out of college, and though this may still be the same machine I desired so many years ago, and my pocketbook finally was able to afford one, I know that I will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Thanks Steve, this is to your memory, and pure honest stubbornness to do a job, and do it well!
