I had been looking for a good laptop/netbook for about a month before comeing across this and thinking to myself "Well....it seems to have a bunch of upgrades and everything else I need (full keyboard, small size, good battery life, internet) but its a mac......" Well it took me a few days to get the PC gamer mentality out of my head and accept that even though the OS was new for me that it would require no extra software(anti-v, runtimes, etc) and that apple would help take care of the thing. That convinced me to get it and it has performed very very well for what I intended it to do. The OS was very easy to learn and while that it limited in many respects for what this laptop is used for this is good in the sense that im not distracted by trying to do this and that and instead am free to focus on my work. I went into this purchase not expecting a lightning fast response time or boot cycle but this old little macbook is AWESOME considering that it is six year old and compared to ANY pc that is that old that was not owned by a hardcore gamer or enthusiast user it is unblievable that it works not only as well as it does but how fast it responds. Considering that it only has a 2.0 ghz core running 1.5gigs ddr2 663 with no discrete card at all(only intel gma) it responds ALMOST at the same speed as my 2nd rig witch has an 8core proc with 8gigs ram and a GTX650ti. By speed I mean the desktop response time and internet loadtimes not video encodeing or games, it cant play minecraft at 60 frames lol! But all things considered and the fact that this is a laptop shows how good a product this is and how good of a company apple is if one of thier 6year old builds ENSURES that someone with a primary rig with 64gigs ram and a 5.2ghz 12core proc with GTX680sli running off raid SSDs dosent drum thier fingers and think,OMG how long is this thing going to take. Overall im very pleased with this laptop's performace FOR THE TASKS I PLANED FOR IT. This is important to remember when compareing it to other laptops. Visualy it has a very nice clean look being all white and the high gloss screen is a nice touch. Some people have said to me that it looks "cheap" but this is because they are gamers that are used to seeing 2000+ dollar laptops that rival desktops and are given extra decorations. I personaly think that it possesses a very nice elegant air to it with only one color and the simple rounded off shape that is representative of simplistic beauty. My only real complant about this thing is that I am for some reason unable to load windows7 on it for a few programs of mine that I dont feel like paying for again on MacOSx. Webcam was non-functional, not that big of an issuse considering that if im going to vid call im going to do it on my main rig. Mike was of excellent quality for a laptop almost as good as my $90 headset. Fans are kinda loud if you are watching you-tube for an hour or so and are going to soon be replaced with some high-end ones, its fine if a gameing tower sounds like a mini-windtunnel under full load and the same goes for gameing laptops to an extent but my travel and work laptop must be SILENT. Keyboard was supriseingly good for a non-mechcanical and none of the keys have ghosting issuses when typeing at 80 WPM but if you are faster than me you may have a problem. Trackpad made me want to kill myself untill one of my friends who is a mac wh*re showed me that you can use two fingers to right click, all while laughing hysterically at me.
This laptop, especially in the customized (i.e. upgraded) form, goes from being totally obsolete to usable with Lion. I know Lion doesn't have App Store backup, but since this laptop has an optical drive, that issue can be worked around, because all the apps you really need can be ordered on DVD or CD.
Lion therefore has no issues running on this machine, and certain eBay sellers can get you install keys to download Lion provided your Internet can support it, and a certain really helpful seller provided a link to software that could make you a bootable install disc.
What I mean to say is that this MacBook can do everything you want a laptop to do on a budget, and with mine having 4GB of RAM and a 250GB hard disk-some of the ultimate customizations possible on this machine, since it's SATA is too slow for an SSD-it does almost as good as a MacBook Pro 13-inch with a Core 2 Duo CPU, except in graphics.
I mean, I don't like iTunes 11 and Safari 6 deleting Cover Flow and a separate Bing search box, so it's useful having a machine that can't run Mountain Lion.
Great value and useful for non-rich Mac needing people!
The MacBook is working perfect. I took it to Apple for a diagnostics check. It just needs a new battery. The interface is similar with my MacBook Pro 2011. This unit doesn't have backlighting on the keyboard...can't work on stuff in the dark. :O)
If you have large fingers the keyboard is a dream and so responsive. plus i love the Mac OS file management system way over windows. as most people do not know all the short cuts and hot-keys built in but it makes it so fast speeding around on this Mac book with clients showing them the work i am doing for them. once i got used to how the mac layout works and all programs are standardize where to find like where preferences always are - saves so much time i can focus more on designing along with no more viruses and spending money on protection that did not work have the time anyway. I love this MacBook and its vibrant screen, high res and easy to port around all day.
I am very happy with this purchase. The product is exactly what I was looking for. I probably should have considered getting one with a Snow Leopard OS instead of Lion -- simply because I didn't realize at purchase how many of my old programs won't run on Lion -- but that was my fault for not doing my research. But I love the MacBook and am sorry to hear Apple is discontinuing the product. Nevertheless, I'm sure I will enjoy mine for years to come.
