Apple seems to be stripping down its entire line of computers; not a good thing. The current plastic "unibody" MacBook is a good example: Apple has eliminated the FireWire port, audio input port, and has given it a non-removable battery. The unibody MacBook also requires opening the entire computer to gain access to its RAM slots and hard drive.
This MacBook, the one I am reviewing, represents the pre-unibody MacBook, or "classic" model MacBook. It has FireWire and it has the easy-to-upgrade RAM and hard drive as well as a removable battery. In the entire history of Apple laptops, the original MacBook laptop design is the only laptop Apple has ever sold that, by removing just one bracket with 3 screws, the user has immediate access to the computer's RAM and hard drive. The original MacBook went through two major revisions, the older Intel Duo Core processor and the more powerful Intel Duo 2 Core processor. A classic design MacBook with an Intel Duo 2 Core processor is a superior laptop choice to the current unibody MacBook offering. If you can find one in good condition, I highly recommend buying one.
Up-side: love my new MacBook! Works great! After years of using a PC, I found it very easy to use! I love the keyboard. I find it also starts up quickly and doesn't crash as often as Windows. It has a very user-friendly desktop and it is quite easy to find the programs that I want to use.
Down-side: It gets very hot when in use, so I had to buy a cooling stand for it, but was able to find a moderately priced one. Also, there are no USB ports on the right side of the computer so, I bought a wireless mouse to use with it. I did find that I had to put current Mac OX software on it in order to use Office and iLife but found that the software was very reasonable priced.
I was looking for a good entry level laptop for my girlfriend. She is an aspiring photographer, so she uses Aperture and iPhoto. I have a Mac Mini I use as an office / media machine that holds all her photo archives. As a result, hard drive space wasn't super crucial. This was a good product for the price ($550 Shipped). I did have to buy another 2GB of RAM ($100) and upgrade to Snow Leopard ($30). All in all, we've still got a good machine for less than the $999 starting point for new MacBooks.
My girlfriend have always wanted a Macbook, but those laptops have always been out of the price range. I ended up buying the laptop off eBay because of the different price ranges that were in my budget. The Macbook looks so sleek. Great computer overall, love that my iphone 4 can easily be hooked up to the laptop and upload songs and pictures with ease. I would highly recommend getting a Macbook if you own an iphone or any other Apple product,as it makes everything easier!!
Used MacBooks are often attractively priced, because Apple releases new models every few months. This model was no exception. It's compact, fast enough, and provides a decent mid-level entry point into the Mac Intel based products that have now become the Apple norm. Portability is a plus, both inside the house (roaming room to room) and for occasional travel, although battery life in a used laptop is often limited. The built-in camera is also a plus. In a couple of years, I'll likely upgrade again, to a newer (but still used) model.
