Movie synopsis
Dan Brown’s novels are packed with fascinating historical tidbits which he ingeniously twists into plots that are so intricate and complex that there is a constant need to inform the reader with exposition, often leaving little room for character development. There is a bit of this stilted quality to ANGELS AND DEMONS, the second of Brown’s novels to be brought to the big screen by the tandem of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, but more than enough intense action to keep the eyes of the audience as busy as their minds. The details of the plot are as diabolical as any in Hollywood history: after the pope’s death, a nefarious organization stashes an antimatter bomb somewhere in the Vatican, threatening to annihilate the conclave of cardinals who are meeting to elect the papal successor. To pass the time until the bomb will detonate, the enemy begins to torture and kill a few of the individual cardinals, but there is a pattern to the grotesque executions, involving hidden sculptural symbols and secret architectural clues. Unfortunately for the church, the man most capable of deciphering the code is the American "symbologist" Robert Langdon (Hanks), who happens to be an affirmed atheist. The script is filled with amazing details about the centuries-old conflict between the church and the Illuminati (whose members included Galileo, Michelangelo, and Bernini), which Hanks uncovers as he breathlessly races between various landmarks in Rome, always a step behind the sinister assassin. The secondary cast consists almost entirely of European actors, including Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgaard, and Armin Mueller-Stahl, who betray so little emotion that it is impossible to tell who is a part of the conspiracy until long after the explosive climax.

Editorial reviews

"[A] thrilling, faster-paced walk in the park....The story line is brilliantly simplified into Langdon's search for the four cardinals....Hanks fits more comfortably into the role of Langdon here..."
Hollywood Reporter - Deborah Young (05/04/2009)

"ANGELS & DEMONS barrels along with a confidence -- and, more fundamentally, a pulse....There's forward movement here, an energy focused by the necessity of managing two plotlines of equal urgency..."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (05/09/2009)

3 stars out of 4 -- "[W]ith fabulous production values. The interiors of the Sistine Chapel, the Pantheon, churches, tombs and crypts are rendered dramatically..."

Very surprising

This is a really good movie, I mean come on, it's Tom Hanks! It kinda reminds you of National Treasure (except a lot more graphic and violent). When I first watched it, I tried to pick out who I thought was guilty, not guilty, and things like that, but I was wrong on everyone I chose. The ending is so shocking (I am not going to tell you how it ends) that I had to go back and watch the ending again. I like a good surprise every once in a while and this movie certainly delivered one. I would definitly recommend that you watch this movie.

Here is a summary of the movie:

Tom Hanks reprises the role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. When Langdon discovers evidence of the the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood knows as the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization's most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican's only hope for survival.

Another Tom Hanks and Ron Howard Hit

Review For: Angels & Demons (DVD, 2009, 2-Disc Set, Extended Edition)

Tom Hanks returns as Robert Langdon in this sequel to the smash hit THE DA VINCI CODE.

When several cardinals are taken hostage and a threat is made to the Vatican, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is called upon by the church to follow the clues and save the day.

This visually stunning Ron Howard film is full of action and adventure.

Those who have seen The Da Vinci Code will love this new movie.

DVD Angels & Demons

After the murder of Italian physicist Leonardo Vetra, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon's investigation with Vetra's daughter leads to a secret society, the Illuminati, and a quest for the world's most potent -- and deadly -- energy source. Ron Howard directed the crime thriller, which is based on The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown's novel.

Worth the $9 I paid.

Bought this movie purely for entertainment purposes, did not expect Oscar-level anything. Still, Ron Howard and Tom Hanks have great track records and I expected some elements of drama and suspense. None in this movie. I am totally gullible and usually fall for every red herring in a book or movie, but I knew, literally, from the first scene who was behind the plot. Stellan Skarsgaard almost managed to single-handedly save the film but with his limited scenes he couldn't quite pull it off. Tom Hanks and Ewan MacGregor did fine acting jobs but really there wasn't much for Tom Hanks do to. "Look! Over there! A church! Let's go there! Look! Another church! Look! A hidden tunnel! Wait! I think someone tried to kill me! Hey! I need that book!" Also, truly great directors can heighten suspense without the use of gore. I was surprised that Ron Howard felt the need to show so much gruesomeness.
So anyway, I really wanted to like this movie a lot. But I only liked it a little. I only paid $9 which is good. It was worth $9, but no more.

Angles & Deamons (Blu-Ray)

The movie is not as good as the book so if you are a fan of Dan Brown's book, Angels & Demons. The movie will disappoint a lot of book fans, especially the ending. In the book, the ending is the best part, all the truths have been told at the end; the movie clearly missed one of the most important ones(I better just stop here and let you guys find it out in the book by yourselves). Compare to the DaVinci Code, I liked The DaVinci Code better, I love movies that are associated with solving mysteries from the past history, which is why I loved the atmosphere of The DaVinci Code. Angels & Demons is more like a pure action movie for me, those deep discussions of the relationship between science and religion are also disappeared in the movie. The movie becomes less meaningful compare to the book; but if you didn't read the book, it would still be a solid thriller to watch.
