Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

Slimmer, more compact design than previous Kindle; improved screen with higher contrast and faster page turns; native PDF support; large library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon's familiar online store; Wi-Fi access to Amazon's online store; built-in keyboard for notes; with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it's capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent battery life; displays image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.

  • THE BAD

No expansion slot for adding more memory; no support for EPUB book files; no protective carrying case included; battery is sealed into the device and isn't removable.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The third-generation Kindle's winning combination of noteworthy upgrades--an improved screen, better battery life, lighter weight, and lower price--vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category.

Pay less, read more!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I love reading, but I'm too lazy to borrow something from library :). And here comes the Amazon Kindle. This eBook fits my needs pretty well. Let's make an overview.
Advantages:

+ Veeery thin and nearly weightless in compare with some other products of that kind in our shops.
+ The display is another nice thing to mention. The background is a bit darker than usual, but the contrast is still very high. I like that smooth screen. Deadly white paper is always making my eyes feel tired. But if you like bright white background, you better look on something else. Sony, maybe...
+ The interface is simple and very easy to get used to it. I guess you can see that I'm not a native English speaker, but I have no trouble in using Kindle with default language setting. It also supports books on Russian, if you're interested ;). The user's guide is coming with the eBook too, by the way.
+ The price! In my country the similar eBooks may cost you twice as much. Or even more. That's the main advantage for me.

Disadvantages:

- Well, the interface is button-based. But there are Touch models if you are interested in touchscreen (Kindle 4).
- The internet browser (and the mp3-player as well) looks pretty primitive. Quality is poor, bugs may occur during listening. Those functions are experimental, though, but if you are looking for good player inside eBook, you better to look on some other products.
- ePub and fb2 formats are not supported! However, there are free converters in internet and well-supported '.mobi' books in Amazon store.

Let's summarize all this: We've got a simple and cheap eBook which is wonderful thing for reading. Only reading. But it's really good for that.

Excellent E-book reader!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This e-ink book has been one of the best purchases that I have made for the 2013 school year. It has exceptional battery life, and an easy to use menu and software catalog to purchase additional e-books directly from Amazon. I would like to point out that the only time that you may ever have to restart this device is when you need to initialize a firmware (Operating System Software) update, which is not too often. Besides this, you can leave it on and still have pretty good battery life, because the e-ink screen does not require an active refresh cycle from the processor (in other words, constant power source). This combination of Longevity and reduced down time makes this device an excellent travel companion and will keep your mind refreshed without the weight of all the paper and ink.

Kindle Keyboard 4GB

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Kindle keyboard lacks the bells and whistles of the Kindle Fire and several tablets which are available. However, if you want an E-Reader and only an E-Reader, the Kindle Keyboard is exactly that. Because of the black and white screen it is easy to see the screen in full sunlight and in less than favorable lighting conditions. I have a lighted cover with this kindle keyboard and it is a great asset. The light fits beautifully into the case when not in use and lights my screen brightly. It also operates conservatively without draining my battery. The keyboard is quicker and easier to type in searches when compared to the touch type screens, but the keyboard makes this device slightly larger. Also, it is nice to know that not all Kindle content works interchangeably from one type of Kindle device to another and not all Kindle audiobooks will play on all tablets with the same account. For instance, I cannot play my Kindle Scrabble game on my Kindle Touch. I play Scrabble exclusively on my Kindle Keyboard. This holds true for most word entry games, as far as I have noticed, but I seldom do anything but read, listen to occasional audiobooks and search device content on my Kindle Keyboard.

Kindle review

I did not like the kindle compared to the nook. Kindle does not down
Load books from library which is a most for great versatility on buying
Books or reading library for free with a better selection than free sites if
You want up to date reading. Kindle hard to use and amazon has a
Monopoly on it to use only amazon for buying books.

My 11 y/o LOVES it. I do too!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

My 11 y/o thinks his new kindle "is great because you can get books, you can get music, games, and you can use the audio voice guide say funny things that you type like 'a hippo ate my sister.'"

I like that it's a reader, not an unlimited entertainment zone like the new kindle fire. I encourage my children to use the internet filtered and am not comfortable with them owning hand-held internet access 24/7. He uses his new kindle to read. When the kids get their hands on my iPod touch, they play games. Amazon doesn't have a ton of games available for free and the screen is black and white. Bonus, because I bought it on ebay, it was cheaper and doesn't have ads. These days on amazon, you need to pay $30 extra to get an ad-free kindle. I'm also jealous that my 11 y/o can afford a kindle and I can't!!! :)
