I bought this system to gain more up to date mapping and touch screen control. I always bought Alpine car stereo and Nav. products and I've never been disappointed. I like the interchange view to make sure your always in the right lane. While the building icons are neat they haven't been as helpful as I first thought, still not a bad feature though. Excellent GPS satellite reception even with the new small antenna/receiver. I only wish the update disc were cheaper.
I've had several other Alpine navigation systems in the past, and had always wanted the NVE-N872. Well, that day finally came.
The Pros: Install was about the same as the other units I've had. Alpine uses speed signals and an internal gyro, which helps, so if you are stuck in an area with poor sat reception, the system still knows where you are, and you can still navigate around.
The display was nice coupled with the IVA-W505 that I had.
The Cons: I used to be such an advocate of Alpine's equipment, but as pricey as they are, it's hard to stay loyal. Especially with how their navigation systems have sunk in quality. This unit is such an incredible pain in the you-know-what to find a destination. It doesn't take into account where you are and radiate out from there. Your first choice for Mcdonalds for example, may be four states away. And even though it brags that it has over 9 million POIs, I found more times than not, I was having to find the place online with my phone to get the address, then punch that in so it would take me there. That is, if the street or address was even in the map database. Horrible, horrible software design. VERY disappointing.
Fortunately, I wasn't stupid enough to pay the $1700 retail. I would have been LIVID if I had paid that for this unit. I have since sold the W505 and 872, and moved on to a much better unit.
Alpine has nice audio head units, but that's about it anymore. Their newer nav units are just plain junk. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS UNIT TO ANYONE!
/////Alpine Electronics is the industry leader in car audio and the flagship DVD based NVE-N872a Navigation unit is no exception! I prefer Alpine over any other car audio brand. I have this particular unit is all of my vehicles; they are very convenient, accurate, and a time saver. I feel confident that I will be guided correctly with pinpoint accuracy.
