OK Ok, I admit this game is OLD now. We have games like F.E.A.R. that is graphically awesome and games like Empire Earth II that makes strategy games more complex than ever before. But... in the end, that ultimately doesn't matter. This game still kicks ass and then some.
Yes, the graphics are horrible, the gameplay is limited and simple, and the maps are small. But man, it's so hella fun!
This is the game that revolutionized the RTS genre, making the players weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each different combat units. The strategy is also very fast-paced and so it is actually a feat to get bored in this game, unlike the long drawn-out scenarios of Age of Empires II and Empire Earth series. Since the epochs are limited to the four basic ones, it only takes a while to be specialized and become familiar with different civilizations and units. Building and destroying is addictingly fun, even with the 1997 graphics and the campaigns require good amoung of wit, skill, and trigger-happy mouse finger.
I don't know if the game is still online capable (do people still play online) but I remember when I used to play this game on gamespy. It was beautiful. I found that each player had different strategies (some would maximize siege weaponry while fortifying the home base; some would use archers and swordsmen simultaneously while scattering resource bases) and it was a totally new experience to play against each one. In simple words, online gaming with game was incredibly fun.
As a classic, this was the best RTS game ever. Comparing it to games of today, it is still one of the best and if not, it's still a hell of a game to have fun with.

Overall:
This is a good title and will provide several hours of entertainment.
Super nice title. Well worth a few bucks.
Please note: this title was reviewed using a Dell XPS Gen 4, P4 HT @ 3.20 GHz, 4 Gig RAM, Dual 160 SATA RAID(0) hard drives and a nVidia GeForce 6800 256mb PCIe video adapter. It is important to read and understand the minimum and recommended system requirements for any PC video game. Systems that are faster than the minimum may provide significantly better performance and improve your gaming experience. Some PC video games list specific video card requirements and will not function without.
It is also important to mention (because we sell video games on ebay) that we do not sell titles as NEW once they are opened and installed for testing. Most test games find a home with one of our testors (employees) and in rare circumstances we will sell as USED.
my opinion of this game is its outdated and was the first of its kind for testing these type of games on the public. Only after its success did they improve the quality of gameplay. So i'll end with, unless you buy the Rise of rome expansion set with it, your without. there's better games like Age of Emp.3...
Have played all Age of Empires except this one. The graphics are older and does not have as many of the features that the newer ones have, but the concept is the same. You must build up your society and defeat your foe. For anyone who likes strategy games Age of Empires is the best series in my mind. It also includes Age of Mythology which is also a great game. I would by any even the older ones.
This game has set the standard for strategy gaming. It rocked the PC world in 1997 and the tremors still influence modern strategy games now. Although its an older game, people still play it often...My dad is playing it right now...
