Movie synopsis
PULP FICTION's Samuel L. Jackson brings his trademark cool to this hip animated series. Afro Samurai (Jackson) is on the hunt for vengeance as he follows the inappropriately named Justice (Ron Perlman, HELLBOY), who is his father's murderer. This mash-up of samurai life and hip-hop features the musical talents of Wu Tang Clan's The RZA. AFRO SAMURAI is available in regular and uncut versions.

3 stars out of 5 -- "It's downbeat but stylish, lobbing in leftfield ideas and serious slice 'n' dice..."
Total Film - Tom Hawker (11/01/2007)

4 stars out of 5 -- "With a monochrome anime style as a backdrop for immeasurable geysers of violent bloodletting....AFRO SAMURAI certainly earns its cool credentials."

Awesome!

Afro Samurai--season 1 is an awesome addition to any anime lovers blu-ray collection. Personally, I didn't get a chance to get into it when it was on Spike TV so I had already made it a point in my mind to get it, but the added bonus came when I learned it would be released on blu-ray (as there are still so few US distributed anime on blu-ray it best to take them where you can get them).

I have to say after watching it I was thoroughly impressed with the visual style and quality of animation. Of course, needless to say having the coolest cat in the world, Samuel L. Jackson, voicing Afro Samurai (as well as the character Ninja-Ninja) and a bangin' hip-hop soundtrack done by The Rza (from Wu-Tang Clan) sure as hell don't hurt either. Afro Samurai is not just some typical cliche search for redemption, let's just be real...it's all about the revengance of son over the murder of his father by a 'man' known only as Justice.

The journey Afro takes is painted in a pretty viscal way--meaning simply put...bloody, very bloody. And though the action is super slick and fast-paced, make no mistake this is not you little brother/sister's Naruto and is strictly for the 'grown' anime fans. It is important to stress that this is the Director's Cut edition which means there could be other things included that wasn't made to show on tv--so definitely no viewing around kids.

All that said if you're looking for a hard-hitting anime title to add to your blu-ray collection this is definitely one to get! I certainly can't wait for a season 2

Afro Samurai, a classic storyline with a modern twist

Review For: Afro Samurai (DVD, 2007, Director's Cut; Uncut)

I first saw some episodes of "Afro Samurai" on the Spike TV network that was run on cable TV in the U.S. in early 2007. I decided to buy the DVD because I found the episodes on TV very entertaining & wanted to see all of them. It was a smart buy, I love the title and quote the film all the time.

For fans of traditional anime series, I think they will enjoy this title very much. I has a classic samurai storyline of a child growing up to seek revenge for his slain father. The title adds modern elements to the story, such as robots, cell phones, firearms, and other high tech "gadgets". Otherwise the story is set in fuedal Japan. There are several elements of western hip-hop culture in the film, namely the title character "Afro" & his side-kick, voices done by Samuel L. Jackson. If you are new to anime you may find this film appealing as well. I would recommend it to someone who liked the "Kill Bill" series or "Sin City".

I bought the "unedited" director's cut version because I hate edited movies. This is a cartoon, but it is full of adult content, parents beware. There is violence, graphic bloodshed, and nudity. The director's cut has a bonus DVD with character interviews and project development stuff. If you want to full experience get the director's cut. Best of luck in your journey for the number one headband.

Afro samurai

im not usually into animae movies and such, mabe the odd cartoon captures my interest but rarely does a animae or manga movie like this attract me.

the main character is like a jim kelly martial arts expert crossed with a samurai, the blend of african and japanese cultures is cutting edge and very different from usual animae movies which lack a urban or almost...gangster kind of persona.

the graphics are amazing and give a kill bill vibe to a lot of the fight scences, the blend of hip hop music provided by the RZA of the wu tang clan is perfect, its a blend of corny cowboy / hip hop and spaghetti western that helps set the scene.

a poor amatuer review like mine doesnt do justice to the cartoon, SAMUEL L JACKSON really picked a winner to do a voice over on and the characters almost remind you of a bad ass shaft like samuel as well !

Afro is a must for any samurai movie fan

This Series is excelent. if you like Samuel L Jackson, the music of the RZA, samurai, violence and great animation mange style you have to own this series. Afro is a kid who see is father murder by the number one assassin and he want to avange is fathers death. Typical samurai story, but this time you have a fresh samurai who smoke weed.

Afro Samurai

Review For: Afro Samurai (DVD, 2007, Director's Cut; Uncut)

Great anime! Loved Sam Jackson's voice for a character. This anime brings as much to the table as Ghost In The Shell or Samurai Champloo. Gritty, adult themed, great action and story line. Plus, the soundtrack done with the RZA is bad ass. Overall, this is what anime is supposed to be.
