I have used the iOS platform since the iPhone first came out, but opted to give the Transformer Prime a shot as opposed to the iPad. I have not been disappointed. The Prime is quick, stable and loaded with features not found on the iPad. For example, along with the Prime, I also ordered a couple of 32 gb class 10 micro sd cards which double my storage capacity. The Transformer easily connects to an HDTV through the micro HDMI slot to enable a full screen browsing experience including sound! Speaking of sound, I have heard a few negative comments about the single speaker. For me, this single speaker was surprisingly loud and very adequate for browsing, etc. When listening to music or watching a movie, etc, I would always opt for my headphones anyway.
I also opted to get the keyboard. The detachable keyboard was a huge selling point and I have not been disappointed! This versatility enables me to leave pretty much only the heavy lifting for my laptop.
I have not experienced any issues with Wifi as some users have indicated. I travel frequently so utilize many and various Wifi situations with no problems. I have also connected my AT&T 3G wireless hotspot with great results.
I am tempted to the give iOS platform an edge in terms of the App Store, but then I think about all of the great apps that enable me to access all of my NAS drives giving me access to Terabytes of data, photos, videos, etc., and I realize that the App store and the iOS edge is probably only "skin deep".
For me, the Prime's only disappointment is the GPS capability. I knew this going in, but had hoped for better performance. I have registered for the new fix from Asus, so we will see what happens ... but I still have my Garmin in any case.
I have been very pleased with the purchase!
I researched every Tablet I could find extensively before purchasing my ASUS Transformer Prime. It is the first to offer Quad Core Prosseing. That alone speaks volumes. The 10.1 inch crisp, clear screen rivals the Ipad. It is also light and portable and the Charcoal Grey metal casing ensures protection. Even as a stand alone Tablet it holds it own but add the mobile keyboard dock and you have a notebook that will also hold it's weight against the entire market. Microsoft's Surface can't compete with $850 price tag compared to ASUS's $345-400 pricetag for the Asus Transformer Prime 32GB. My Transformer Prime was bought when I enrolled in college. It was the smartest decision I've made aside from going back to school. From the powerful stand alone Tablet to the keyboard mobile dock-Notebook, to the stylus controlled "Super Note" app it makes my courses a breeze. The ASUS Transformer Prime is a powerhouse in the Tablet market and is in a class all it's own. A+++
Being an anti Apple person, I would have to say this is the only game in town, this machine kicks butt. The only drawback for me is the size, I would prefer a 7" tablet, but it looks like the 7" version of this product (Asus Memo 370T) has been cancelled for political reasons. For a little less money you can get the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, but you get a lot less performance. Also consider this before buying a tablet at this time, Samsung makes the "IRIS" display for the new Ipad, and will no doubt release their own tablet with that display in the near future, so stand by. The only other question is, why are people willing to pay so much at auction here, when you can order one one of these Asus machines from Amazon for $499 with free shipping?
I shopped and compared tablets for several months and made up my mind that I did not want an iPad due to the "closed" system those have. This Transformer is fast and clear and am very glad I made the choice I did. I don't want a "netbook style" computing device as I have both a business laptop and a small Gateway netbook. This is exactly what I wanted to take with me for day trips. It holds a charge without the keypad for several days if not used and about 7 hours constant use. I take very good care of my devices and expect to use this for a few years. I can also double the memory as an SD card can be slipped right in to save the hard drive!
An excellent tablet, the only real downside IMHO is that WiFi/GPS isn't as good as on the original but it is acceptable.
Pro's versus the TF101:
- a decent microphone.
- newer Tegra 3 chip (better video/gaming performance).
- better stock firmware.
- better dock circuitry.
Con's versus the TF101:
- Sound system not as good.
- WiFi has much less effective range to speed ratio.
- Not as good a battery life.
