…Dylan’s songs of conversion praising the lord finally receive proper vindication and acceptance with the release of this choice slice of “Gospel Bob,” done up with just the right touches of Sunday morning sanctity and backwoods gris-gris. Every cut here is a keeper. -Keys to the Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia
…this is not a tribute this is a showcase of Dylan as one of our great gospel songwriters-albeit 25 years after the fact… If you buy one gospel record in 2003, let this be it. (4 1/2 stars) –All Music Guide
…These songs from Bob Dylan's fundamentalist-Christian period are truly born again, thanks to bracing reinterpretations by gospel icons. (3 stars) –Rolling Stone
…Bob Dylan's 1979 album turn to born-again Christianity, Slow Train Coming, and its 1980 follow-up, Saved, may have been shocking then, but the songs from those discs seem like gospel standards now, especially when performed by the genre greats who grace this set. (►) –Billboard Magazine
…performances by some of the best artists in the gospel genre… they belt out the notes and enunciate the words with a passionate conviction. –Oxford American
…this tribute lets us hear these spirituals the way the writer probably heard ‘em in his head… even agnostics may now agree there was something nearly supernatural about Dylan's mastery of an unlikely idiom--black gospel. (A-) -Entertainment Weekly

…Suddenly, Dylan's songs sound as if they were crafted for a full-gospel tent revival—the kind of songs that pierce through a muggy summer night and wring every ounce of sweat from the choir singing them and the church folk swaying in their seats and throwing their hands toward God. –Sojourners Magazine
…Dylan’s Christian hymns newly recorded and with great verve by a virtual who’s who of gospel greats… These mighty performances certainly place these songs into a context where they gain relevance and weight. –Sing Out!
…the unmistakable presence of the Holy Ghost began to fill the room…everyone involved in putting this compilation together, were blessed with a very special anointing…This CD undoubtedly will be one of the year’s favorite gospel releases. Years from now, it will be viewed as yet another Dylan classic. –Gospel City
I did not realize that this was not actually Bob Dylan when I bought it. There is only one or two songs that I liked that were remixed. I am no expert on Black Gospel, but I found the recording to be in that traditional framework. With Bob Dylan’s style, I can understand why. I enjoy all kinds of music, but I’m not often inclined to listen to the Black Gospel traditional music. I like blues such as Glenn Kaiser and others. Stomp by Kirk Franklin was a household favorite of my family. But as far as Bob Dylan’s music is concerned, nobody does it quite like him. Why settle for second best, when you can buy his originals?
Though I do enjoy a listening to a variety of music, I have never considered myself a true Rock and Roll fan. However, I appreciate musical talent of all types. This album is a collection of gospel songs written by Bob Dylan and performed by many different singers and groups, including one song performed by Dylan. I was touched by the messages in these songs and enjoy the timeless sounds of Dylan's music. It is a very uplifting album and I will enjoy it for years to come.
I thought it was the original Bob Dylan CD, didn't pick up on the fact that other people, that I never heard of were singing his songs.
I am a Christian and was unaware that Dylan was saved. This cd is a beautiful testimony expressed by the talented folks who put this together. Enjoy!
