Movie synopsis
An aggressive chase and a stray bullet nearly ends the career of undercover narcotics agent Nick Tellis (Jason Patric) whose job is tearing apart his life and his family. Tellis dreams of working a less stressful desk job, and he knows that a conviction in an upcoming case will land him the job. So he accepts an assignment assisting the overlong investigation of a slain officer, hoping it will be his last experience of street work. Tellis is partnered with Lt. Henry Oak (Ray Liotta) whose unorthodox methods are part of the reason the case is still unsolved.Strict attention to police procedure and cop lingo lift writer-director Joe Carnahan's (BLOOD, GUTS, BULLETS AND OCTANE) gritty, violent film above the cliches of the typical police thriller. NARC is fueled by impassioned performances from leads Patrick, a wary officer who seeks the truth as a means to his own psychological redemption; and Liotta (who also produced), as a broken cop with sadistic, rule-breaking tendencies. The film's grimy immediacy is to the credit of cinematographer Alex Nepomniaschy.

Editorial reviews

"...A believable, fleshed-out film....NARC is convincing, an entertaining, grimy view of the traps of machismo tucked inside a cop thriller..."
New York Times - Elvis Mitchell (12/20/2002)

"...Cinematographer Alex Nepomniaschy, sometimes using hand-held shots, establishes a jittery tone that works..."
USA Today - Mike Clark (12/20/2002)

"...The characters, and Carnahan's shades-of-gray FRENCH CONNECTION-style action, inspire the actors -- they play off one another with blazing skill..."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (01/03/2003)

"...An impressively edgy piece of genre film-making....One of Carnahan's achievements is to maintain a persuasively dark vision throughout..."
Sight and Sound - Andy Richards (02/01/2003)

"...It works and is backed up by a skintight plot, a snappy script and a duo of brilliant performances....It's a two-man show and Liotta and Patric form a praiseworthy double act..."
Total Film - Dan Jolin (03/01/2003)

Another great movie with a "Twist" at the end

Review For: Narc (DVD, 2003, Widescreen)

WOW!!! Patric, Liotta and Busta OUTSTANDING performances.

Saw this movie a while ago and must say that it must have been a "sleeper" hit because I don't remember it getting any commercial play nor very much trailer exposure at the Theaters. I can say one thing I sure am glad that Tom Cruise saw this at Sundance or whatever Film Festival he saw it and decided to back it because it may have been one of those that went str8 to video after 1 month on the big screen which is a shame because I believe many will miss the opportunity to catch this gripping drama. The previous reviews does so much justice to the plot that I won't even go into a lengthy description.

Ray Liotta is compelling in his INTENSE good-yet-Hard A$$-cop potrayal(nuff said... want to know more rent the movie), Jason Patric has always been one of the most underrated actors of "my" time he does a Superb job as a Cop dealing with his own demons and the slow realization that there is more to this investigation than is on paper, Chi McBride has a minimal role but always love to see his acting last but not least Busta Rhymes.... I am so impressed by his increased acting roles and the growth he has shown (you go boiiiiiiii - circa Flava Flav) LOL

The story/plot is engrossing yes, the plot sounds familiar but TRUST me this is not the same ole scenario, same ole outcome. It has some scenes of violence that may disturb some. The Movie shows some day-to-day injustice that exists out there but is allowed as well as the ever problematic dual NARC life (just take enough to get them to trust you get you in...... YEA... RIGHT!!) Location was in Detroit very dark, gritty some of the scenes are shot with the "running camera" effect which I sometimes get motion sickness LOL but it goes with the flow of the movie, also some of the scenes were played like a comic book set-up (without the cartoon images) but in the "4-scenes-on-the-screen&quot; look. Everything pulled together effectively.

If you liked "Rush" you should enjoy this.

Perfect Narc Cop Film, Ray Liotta Amazes!

Review For: Narc (DVD, 2003, Widescreen)

I love the action in this movie along with the drama it includes.

The cast is awesome, which includes: Ray Liotta, Jason Patric, Busta Rhymes & Chi McBride.

There's some comedy in the movie, when a junkie was too lazy to pick up his bong while he was in the bathtub so he smoked a shotgun with drugs inside, which lead to him getting shot since it was loaded and was heated up. That's the funniest thing I've ever seen. And the dumbest.

I like all the action in the film, including Liotta with a shotgun. I also like the drama that comes with his former partner having been shot (supposedly by two thugs/punks over drugs, which you find out isn't the case later on).

There's also the possibility that Liotta shot his former partner, which isn't the truth either.

The truth is a huge surprise but it makes sense why the Narc cop wanted to place the reason for his partner's death on a couple guys who didn't kill him in order to relieve himself of the trauma he endured when his partner died in front of him.

I saw on a website someone compared Narc to Training Day, and since I saw that I think I'd like to see Training Day sometime soon to see if there's some similarity between the two.

I recommend this film to anyone who likes cop films, drama, interesting scenarios, and is a fan of Ray Liotta (which I am).
