The 1909 V.D.B is the perfect type coin for the Lincoln penny.

The 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln penny is one of the most well-known coins in the hobby. It is easily recognizable and is the first year of the series. For this reason I would suggest it for your type set. It's brother (1909-S V.D.B.) is the king of the Lincolns, but is priced out of most (including me) coin collectors. The difference in price for an MS66 can be thousands of dollars.
Go for high grade when choosing for your type set. If you have a competitive set, go for a red example. The RB (Red/Brown)coins can be beautiful, but a red coin commands more registry points. Prices on this coin have gone up over the last 5 or so years.
I chose a MS64RB for my type set because I fell in love with the coin. Although it contradicts what I said before, choose a coin that you love, not a grade, unless your goal is registry points.

I am an avid coin collector. This is the first year of the lincoln penny. The most desired or "King" of the lincolns is the 1909 S VDB, but are very costly. They can range from $500.00 to $10,000. The next desirable coin is 1909 S. This coin does not have a VDB stamped on reverse. It can range in cost of $50.00 to $1000.00. The 1909 "plain" which is a Philadelphia mint, are the most numerous coins available. I have purchased a 1909 S, that has been cleaned at a very reasonable price of $40.00. To increase the value of a penny, please don't clean them. Thanks!! Bart

Abe Lincoln's legacy

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Lincoln Wheat Cents remind us of the hard work and its benefits. Abe Lincoln began as a common man, cutting wood, and worked his way to becomming a lawyer, then eventually to the presidency. While I did not know him personally, I know his reputation for being a somewhat "average Joe" who dedicated his life to getting results. Being from a farmland area myself, I've seen the hard work and effort it takes to till, plant, fertilize, and grow wheat. Poeple rumor him to be the president who "wanted to free the slaves." I don't believe this was to hurt the Southern states' economy, but to keep eveyone accountable for rewards reaped by their own labor.

The KING of Coins!!

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

In my small collection of coins the Lincoln Cent is by far my favorite coin. I had a nice 1909 Lincoln Cent but was looking for something a little nicer. So I went through literally hundreds of 1909's until I found the right one at the right price. It now is in my collection and it makes for a great start to this outstanding series. Someday, probably not in the not to distant future, the Mint will stop producting the Lincoln Cent. But for those of us that cherish this coin having a nice high grade fully RED 1909 Lincoln Cent in our collection will be glad we collected such a coin. We will be forever grateful to Victor David Brenner for such a wonderful design that has lasted for over 100 years.
