1884 Morgan Dollar

 | Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Created: 05/11/12
The 1884 Morgan Dollar was manufactured by all four U.S. Mints that were in operation. The silver dollar was an extremely controversial coin at this time because of the terrible inflation. Many people demanded paper money or gold coins, because the actual silver contents of the dollar coin was only about 55c, and they were bulky and heavy. By the terms of Bland-Allison Act, the Treasury was required to purchase between two and four million dollars worth of silver at market value every month. This was legislation designed to protect the interests of wealthy silver miners and not the American people. This resulted in the minting of hundreds of millions of coins, many of which were simply being stored. About 28,000,000 silver dollar coins were produced in 1884 in total. Of this total, just less than 24,000,000 were produced by the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints. Even today, average uncirculated coins from these two mints are worth little, $40-$70, and in circulated grades, just basic bullion value. However, the coins produced at the Carson City mint were mostly stored until the mid 1960's. Prior to their release, they were thought to have been smelted and were considered to be very scarce. A total of 1,136,000 coins were produced, but 962,000 pieces were not released until 1964. These coins are currently worth between $120-$300. The really important coin from 1884 is the San Francisco coin. A total of 3,200,000 pieces were produced, and virtually all were put into circulation. Although there are many, very high grade, but lightly circulated coins still in existence, true uncirculated coins are rare. This, along with the scuffing and bagmarking that naturally occurs during the handling of the 1000 coin bags, makes those coins that are fully struck and relatively unmarked, extremely rare and valuable. Any basic mint state (MS60) 1884-S, Morgan Dollar is worth at least $7000, and a high-grade (MS65) specimen could easily fetch a price of $200,000 or more at auction!

Any new and experienced collector buying Morgan Silver Dollars should own a Carson City (CC) mintmark. The first Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar he/she should buy is the 1884 CC. This date is very easy to find in MS (uncirculated) grade and is the least expensive uncirculated CC Morgan Silver Dollar. I perfer the uncirculated GSA CC Morgan Silver Dollars over the PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG certifed CC Morgan Dollars. I believe with more and more GSA CC Morgan Dollars getting cracked out and certified, over time GSA uncirculated CC will outperform the certified CC.

I love the Morgan Dollar. What a classic piece of American History. The weight and size of it really makes you appreciate silver coins. The coin in my eyes is probably one of the best American coins to have in a collection and they make excellent gifts as well to loved ones. I highly recommend anyone who collects coins to purchase a Morgan dollar.

Well its a good coin to start with for the basic coin collector or just someone who wants to rack up extras to either sell or have them on hand. This coins full of luster and feels heavy maybe because I didnt weight it but if you take the same year and put one in each hand its about the same. The eagles in great shape for the year and the feathers are in good detail, although the breast is wore alittle, but look at the history of the coin by the year its been around.I always wonder who could of had it in their pocket"lol".
