Movie synopsis
This acclaimed film version of Peter Stone's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, which was one of the last big-budget studio musicals, stars William Daniels (TV's Saint Elsewhere) as John Adams and Howard Da Silva as Ben Franklin. A rollicking, anachronistic treatment of the creation of the Declaration of Independence, with the American forefathers conducting themselves with uncharacterstic--and comical--indignity. Academy Award Nominations: Best Cinematography (Harry Stradling, Jr.)

A Must-See for any American Citizen and Musical Lover

Review For: 1776 (DVD, 2002, Director's Cut)

I first experienced "1776" as a stage play in Hartford, CT as a young man, and was filled with emotion as the fledgling American Congress, through dialogue and music, slowly came together to sign one of the most important documents of all time, the Declaration of Independence. That musical experience has finally been transferred from the stage presentation, then a VHS version, followed by a laserdisc, and now to DVD. Jack Warner was certainly to be commended for bringing this play and musical to film. Rather than go on and on, let me just say that for history buffs and those who just want to see a great musical, and also for those who might need a clearer explanation of the founding of this country as an independent nation, you just cannot go wrong by viewing this film. At its finale, I guarantee you will feel yourself filling up a little with pride at what those men accomplished over 200 years ago.

A *must have* movie you'll never forget...

Review For: 1776 (DVD, 2002, Director's Cut)

One of the best things about this movie is the sheer unexpected delight of it. It's a musical that doesn't "watch" like a musical; it's a love story that's too clever and bawdy to be dismissed as a "chick flick". It's a historical piece chock-full of accurate quotes (though it does take creative license on some factual details). You will laugh yourself to tears.

This movie contains some of my all-time favorite lines and scenes, not the least of which is William Daniels' performance as the "obnoxious and disliked" John Adams. Howard DaSilva is brilliant as Dr. Benjamin Franklin ("Don't worry, John. The history books will clean it up.").

I first watched this movie with my dad when I was a little. I thought then I would hate it, but loved it. Ever since, I have relished watching the same reaction in everyone who has watched it with me as they go from not being interested in seeing it to counting it among their favorite movies. Any age. Male or female. This movie will give you a thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining glimpse at the most significant turning point in US history -- when we became The United States of America.

1776 movie musical

Review For: 1776 (DVD, 2002, Director's Cut)

1776 is one of the best movies ever made based on a Broadway musical. The musical numbers and dialogue retain the power they had when I saw the show. William Daniels and Howard Da Silva are 2 of the stage actors wisely kept in the movie version-they are great! While not 100 percent historically accurate,1776 can give young people a good start on the hardship the founding fathers went through trying to found the USA.

A REAL GEM!

Review For: 1776 (DVD, 2002, Director's Cut)

This film version of 1776 is phenomenal! Ken Howard and Blythe Danner are so perfect as Thomas and Martha Jefferson. William Daniels successfully captures the neuroticism of John Adams. Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin will have you laughing out loud over and over again! This film has sections that make you laugh, others that make you cry, and by the end it helps you understand what it took to give birth to the United States of America!

wonderfully entertaining!

Review For: 1776 (DVD, 2002, Director's Cut)

If you caught the HBO presentation about John Adams recently...you will see a few things different with this movie adaptation of the making of our Declaration of Independence. There was no holding out with the Southern states with the wording of all men being created equal....in the movie they made those words disappear....with Franklin telling Adams that first they had to break from England..then others could handle the freedom of the slaves. In this uncut version of the movie..with the directors commentary included...telling you what scenes were deleted in the version made originally, and also some backround information regarding some of the actors. I loved this so much when I rented it, and had to have it for my own..to watch again whenever I wanted. It is long..so settle in...get the remote ready t o pause now and then..or go back to it another night..but you will not be disappointed.
