Movie synopsis
Where does a down-on-his-luck movie star go for inspiration when his career has sputtered to a four-year halt? This is the question director/writer Brad Silberling (LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS) poses for his central character--an unnamed actor played by Morgan Freeman--in 10 ITEMS OR LESS. The answer lies amid the cheap cereal packets and decomposing vegetables of a dilapidated grocery store on the outskirts of Los Angeles, a location Freeman travels to so he can research a potential comeback role. Once there he encounters Scarlet (Paz Vega), a Spanish cashier who, terminally bored with her life and job, takes out all her grievances on the unsuspecting customers in her 10-Items-or-Less line. At the end of Scarlet's shift, Freeman's character finds himself stranded in this desolate outpost, so he approaches her and the two strike up a deal--she will give him a ride home, but only after he has shadowed her while she finishes her errands for the day. Freeman draws some well-observed comic material from the fish-out-of-water situations his character finds himself in, and Silberling proves his low-budget directorial chops after working on a number of bigger projects. 10 ITEMS OR LESS is a slight piece, coming in around the 80-minute mark, but the interplay between Freeman and Vega really makes the film, with the two actors finding a meaningful balance in the serious and amusing material Silberling has written for them. While Freeman's work is typical of the high quality expected of him, Vega is a revelation. Her feisty, occasionally downtrodden, and remarkably beautiful interpretation of Scarlet provides a strong indication of her potential as an actress, and bigger things will surely follow.

simple and charming..

i gave this movie only 4 stars, because at first i was a little confused about how the movie began, but i persisted, because i absolutely love morgan freeman..he is truly my favorite actor of all time! and paz vega won me over with her role in spanglish..so i gave it a go---in the end, i was smiling and had this kinda good feeling overall...but be warned, this is not your typical kinda movie..but it is a good one nonetheless...;-)

Breezy and uplifting comedy

I bought this movie because Morgan Freeman, more or less playing himself in this movie, conveys sincere wonderment at a plain world that is unfamiliar to him. It's a subtly inspirational model for an appreciative perspective that I need to be reminded of from time to time. Paz Vega's character is the opposite--weary, cynical, and pessimistic about people and her own prospects. Their interaction and her gradual adoption of his hopefulness in a pedestrian setting make this a low-key yet emphatic story about friendship and learning.

This little gem of a low-budget film is a showcase for the considerable talents and wit of Morgan Freeman. The multi-culturalism is very contemporary, and Morgan Freeman uses the film as a platform to model his innate respect for people in general. It is funky and silly and sly, and one of the few films I enjoy watching repeatedly.

Unknown Masterpiece--Worth watching over and over

This little unknown movie--is hands down one of my favorite movies ever, witty, subtle and dry humor. Freeman is unbelieveably good. I recommended this to everyone -- It should have gotten way more attention-it deserves it.

Ten Items or Less

This is a low budget production that surpasses more elaborate productions. It is a simple, down to earth story of two people whoe meet and enjoy each other's company for a day before going their own ways. The outlook is positive and the acting natural. Particulary recommended for people who who want to get over having had a bad day!
