Many versions of the tragic story of two forbidden loves, Romeo and Juliet, have surfaced over the centuries, but the original is still held sacred to many. Written by William Shakespeare in what is believed to have been between the years 1591 and 1595, the original version has been enjoyed by millions. The play has been performed in countless venues, and many film versions have been produced as well. The innocence of the young love tugs on the heartstrings of all who hear the tale. Though the metaphors are lost on many, it was common of the time to speak in metaphors during romantic conversations. This allowed the man to be able to test the feelings of the woman without having to lose his honor. If she accepted the romantic inclinations, she could respond; however, if she did not accept she could pretend not to understand. When reading original works from this time period, understanding these tendencies is helpful. Attempts to trace the origin of the story has produced many versions of this story have been met with just another possibility. Some people think that some of the similarities to Pyramus and Thisbe, ill-fated lovers from Greek Mythology, are uncanny. Two of Shakespeare’s plays, "Romero and Juliet" and "A Midsummer's Night Dream," mimic the storyline of this mythological pair.
