The big V-twin Harley 103 engines form the rumbling heart and soul of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle line. With a generous 103-cubic inch displacement, this powerful overhead valve engine creates faster acceleration than its smaller predecessors; the Evolution and the Twin Cam. First manufactured in 1984, Harley Evo engines are air-cooled, V-twin engines with the cylinders set 45 degrees apart. The 82-cubic inch Evo replaced the Shovelhead engine design and powered bikes such as the Sportster, Softail, FXR, Touring, and Dyna frames. Made since 1998, the Harley Twin Cam engine offered significant upgrades from its predecessor, the Evolution engine. It featured an improved cooling fin area, a cooling oil jet for the bottom of the pistons, and a dual-coil ignition system that eliminated the wasted spark-firing pattern. The Twin Cam 88 powered the 1999 Dyna and Touring frames, followed by the 2000 model Softails. The second-generation Twin Cam 96 debuted for the 2007 model year releases.
