Causing people to flock by the millions to various couponing sites, the reality TV show "Extreme Couponing" has become an obsession for millions. Although they show obviously depicts the "best case" scenarios of couponing, it none-the-less has many striving to see how much money they can save. Additionally, the thought of getting something free intrigues many. The show combines savvy shopping skills with couponing to try to accumulate the most groceries for the least amount of money. The Wall Street Journal can be credited for first mentioning the idea of "extreme couponing" in one of their publications. The first show to encompass these ideas was a segment on ABC Nightline entitled "Extreme Couponing Competition: How Far Can $50 Go?" TLC aired a preview of a show on December 10, 2010 entitled "Extreme Couponing." The preview exceeded their expectations drawing in over 2 million viewers. Many critics claim the popularity of the show is the combination of a modern fascination of reality TV and sparked interests in ploys to save money. This is very likely a result of the fact that most Americans simply do not have as much money as they did before. The struggling economy makes shows like this one gain popularity quickly as many people look for any answer to their crisis. Other critics state that the show is deceptive with its look at extreme couponing. Although there are real possibilities to save a lot of money with coupons, the savings shown on the show are a rarity. Even so, this does not stop the goal of many to do as well as possible to cut their monthly grocery bill by using methods seen on the show.
