eBay Goes Wireless with Palm VII Connected Organizer

Now eBay Users On The Go Can Browse, Search and Bid Online

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 4, 1999—eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com) the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, today announced that its service will be available to users of the new Palm VII connected organizer, the first handheld computing product for out-of-the-box wireless Internet access. Using 3Com's (Nasdaq: COMS) Palm VII organizer, eBay's community can conveniently track their online trades without being in front of a desktop computer. A new web clipping application for the Palm VII, developed for eBay by WorkSpot Inc., delivers wireless access to www.ebay.com — allowing users to browse, search and bid on the over 2.8 million items available today on eBay.

The Palm VII eBay web clipping application has a simple, easy to use interface and category structure familiar to eBay's community and will be available for free download via links from www.workspot.com and www.ebay.com.

"Nearly six million people rely on eBay to do business and pursue their collecting passions and bringing eBay to the popular Palm Computing platform gives them the opportunity to trade on eBay wherever the Palm.Net service is available," said Steve Westly, eBay's vice president of marketing and business development. "We are always looking for ways to provide our community with easier access to eBay wherever they are, 24 hours a day."

"The Palm VII organizer continues to gain momentum as top Internet commerce providers like eBay offering new web clipping applications that provide users greater flexibility in their everyday lives," said Alan Kessler, president, Palm Computing, a 3Com company. "Now eBay users can make bids, check their trades and search for new items wherever they go, wirelessly and from the palm of their hands."

Personal Collection From Joe Dimaggio Estate To Be Auctioned Exclusively On eBay

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 18, 1999—The opportunity to own a piece of baseball history is coming to eBay® (NASDAQ: EBAY; www.ebay.com). Ralph Perullo, a Charlotte business executive who recently acquired the memorabilia estate, will host the premiere Joe DiMaggio estate auction on eBay. Perullo has been a lifelong New York Yankee fan and fondly remembers DiMaggio gliding the bases and roaming the outfield of Yankee Stadium. Highlights of the offerings on eBay will include:

"Few sports celebrities reach the status of becoming an American icon like Joe DiMaggio. Hosting this historic sports auction is an honor for eBay," said Mike Stevens, program manager for eBay Inc. "We are excited to bring this prestigious collection from the Joe DiMaggio Estate to the online community, and give many people the opportunity to own a piece of sports history."

Perullo has committed to giving a portion of the proceeds to charity, the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.) which helps indigent former players, and the Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) association, with national headquarters in Charlotte.

The auction will begin on eBay October 20 and will continue until October 30. eBay will also introduce a special Joe DiMaggio destination on its site to promote the estate auction, providing a place where collectors can come to find the wide range of DiMaggio estate items.

eBay Great Collections is a result of the company's work with recently acquired subsidiary Butterfield & Butterfield. By listening to and tapping into the knowledge of the experts - auction houses, galleries and dealers - eBay's goal is to offer the Internet's best destination for fine art, collectibles and antiques.

At eBay Great Collections, auction houses, galleries and dealers will have their own branded areas - bringing their trusted reputations online and giving these companies the opportunity to grow their businesses. On the web site they will be able to present their merchandise to eBay's existing community of over 5.6 million active members and allow their current customers to visit their favorite auction house or gallery more often - this time online at the eBay Great Collections web site.

The items showcased on eBay Great Collections will come from auction houses, galleries and dealers from around the world. The initial group of participating auction house partners include:

  • Alibris; Emeryville, California

With eBay Great Collections users will have access to items previously reserved for the auction floor. To sell items on eBay Great Collections registered eBay sellers are encouraged to apply to become an eBay Great Collections dealer or to list their items on consignment with participating auction houses or dealers.

Auction houses and dealers participating in eBay Great Collections will offer authentication services with the same guarantees they provide in the offline world, provide customer support to interested bidders via email and manage their own auctions. The eBay Great Collections auctions will be in the same format as those found of the eBay site and will include access to escrow, insurance and shipping services.

eBay Goes Live in Australia

World's Largest Online Trading Community Launches New Australian Web Site

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 20, 1999—eBay®, the world's largest person-to-person online trading community has launched its new Australian web site (www.ebay.com.au). The new site offers Australian buyers and sellers the opportunity to trade popular Australian items, such as Olympic and AFL memorabilia, Australian stamps and coins, and other unique items in more than 2,000 categories. Also, an easy-to-use search mechanism allows people to quickly find items located in Australia or from among the 3 million items listed on eBay around the world.

eBay pioneered online person-to-person trading, creating a huge marketplace and community where people can buy, sell, chat and share their experiences with fellow collectors all over the world. Already thousands of Australians are avid eBay users—some make their living from selling on eBay while others have discovered a fun and entertaining web site that allows them to pursue their collecting passions.

"www.ebay.com.au offers an irresistible combination for Australian traders - compelling local categories and listings, as well as access to a worldwide community of 5.6 million active buyers and sellers," said Alison Deans, managing director of eBay Australia & New Zealand. "No other web site offers Australians such a vibrant local marketplace and worldwide reach."

To promote the launch of the web site, eBay Australia is waiving all listing fees for a limited period, providing sellers with an even greater reason to list their items on www.ebay.com.au.

"I've been trading sports cards and collectibles at eBay for over 18 months," says Paul Richardson, an avid local eBay user. "I am really excited about the opportunities that the local site will open for me to buy and sell more local things, like Aussie Rules trading cards and memorabilia. Also, I like the idea of trading in Aussie dollars, rather than foreign currencies."

The new eBay Australia (www.ebay.com.au) web site now offers:

  • Country-specific categories and content, reflecting popular Australian collectibles such as AFL, cricket and rugby memorabilia; Australian coins and stamps; and Olympic pins;
  • The ability to trade in Australian dollars and search for items located in Australia;
  • Unparalleled access to a worldwide community of traders, with over 300,000 new items listed every day and over 3 million items for sale at any one time. Australian sellers can list their item so it can be viewed from any eBay site and buyers can view items listed anywhere in the world;
  • Local chat boards that allow eBay's Australian community to get the most out of the web site including the eBay Australia Café.

eBay Australia & New Zealand is a joint venture between ecorp Ltd and eBay.

BMW and eBAY Team Up for Charity Auction of the First Customer-Delivered X5

All Sale Proceeds to Benefit The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey, October 28, 1999— BMW and eBay® plan to give philanthropically minded consumers the opportunity to make a donation and to purchase one new X5 Sports Activity Vehicle before it is available to the general public.

BMW of North America, Inc., and eBay, Inc., the world's leading person-to-person online trading community, have teamed up to offer the first customer-delivered X5 Sports Activity Vehicle through an online auction at www.ebay.com Oct. 29 – Nov. 7. The vehicle will be delivered through an authorized BMW SAV Center and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The auction is BMW's final event of the year to support the Komen Foundation. During the last three years, BMW has donated more than $3 million to Komen through its grass-roots programs. The Ultimate Drive invites BMW customers and the general public to test specially badged BMWs. For every mile that is "test driven" during these events, BMW donates $1 to the Komen Foundation.

The first customer-delivered X5 will have a Titanium Silver Metallic exterior and come equipped with Sport and Activity packages, the brand's state-of-the-art navigation system and a moonroof. The suggested retail price of the vehicle as equipped is $57,105 (including delivery and handling). While it is a completely new type of BMW, the X5 is characterized by the well-known features typical of the BMW experience, such as its Head Protection System, Dynamic Stability Control and exceptional handling.

However, this is the first truck from BMW, and the vehicle's dimensions, flexibility and all-wheel-drive capability clearly separate the X5 from anything the German manufacturer has ever brought to market. The X5 represents a technological evolution for the BMW marque and - with its agility, responsiveness and state-of-the art safety systems - creates an entirely unique driving experience in the segment. The 2000 BMW X5 4.4i will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price, including shipping and handling, of $49,970.

As an added bonus, BMW will fly the winning bidder to its new, state-of-the-art Performance Center in Spartanburg, S.C. There, a BMW specialist will provide a thorough introduction to the X5; a tour of the nearby manufacturing facility, where the X5 will be built exclusively; and time to explore the BMW Zentrum, a museum dedicated to more than 75 years of BMW's history.

The thrill continues when BMW professional drivers also give the winning bidder specialized driving instruction on the Performance Center's 1.7-mile paved driving skills course. Configured into one of 35 variations, the driving skills course simulates everyday driving conditions. There is also a 300-foot diameter smooth concrete skid pad that can be made as slick as black ice to allow the winning bidder to test the limits of the X5's adhesion and handling systems, including ABS brakes, All Season Traction and Dynamic Stability Control.

The winning bidder will also get special instruction on BMW's "other roads" course which simulates poor unpaved road conditions, including bridge crossings, steep hills and water crossings. The winning bidder will be challenged to use mental and physical reflexes to maneuver this perfectly balanced vehicle on a "teeter-totter" balance bridge.

BMW will arrange for delivery of the X5 through an authorized Sports Activity Vehicle retailer to the winning bidder after the trip to the Performance Center.

"With its legendary BMW performance, styling, luxury and technology, the X5 is a joy to drive on any road for any reason," said Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of the BMW (US) Holding Corp. "We're thrilled to be auctioning the first customer-delivered X5 online and donating the proceeds to the Komen Foundation."

"We're excited to work with BMW of North America to make the first customer-delivered X5 available to the eBay community while uniting people to get involved in charitable giving," said Simon Rothman, vice president and general manager of eBay Automotive.
